I see for new deals, the phone now needs to be connected into the back of the router, for example Virgin and BT (digital voice) are doing this.

Does anyone know if vodafone are doing it ? or any others ? thanks.

These don't work in a power cut.

Neither will cordless phone systems which many use today, as the base station requires power to transmit.

Personally not bothered about Digital Voice, the number of times I need to use a landline in a year can be counted on the fingers of one foot!

We had a problem with our virgin landline. The repair guy didn’t bother looking for the fault and instead put in a wire at the back of the router. He did say that in the event of a power cut we would still be able to dial emergency services, but I didn’t ask how.

Some ISPs are not going to offer an equivalent to Digital Voice (eg Plusnet) so the customer will either have to move to a VOIP provider or depend on mobiles (if they have a usable signal!!)
  • I have a Fritz!Box 4060 router that has a built in DECT PBX. I am with Aquiss for FTTP and AAISP for VOIP: the latter costs me £1.20 a month.

Its not a "landline" but VOIP (voice over IP aka the internet). There are plenty of third party providers of VOIP that can provide a service whoever your ISP is. You can buy dedicated VOIP telephones that have an ethernet connection rather than landline RJ11 connection but if you particularly love your phone but dont have a RJ11 socket on your router you can get a small box that sits between the two. Plus you can put software on your computer and/or phone if you dont want a traditional looking landline phone any more.

I know Virgin provide an emergency contact phone that works in a power cut, as they kept insisting we had one even though we didn't need it. Took them weeks to agree to not give us one. It connects to the router and is like a full sized phone but you can only ring emergency services on it. Designed for vulnerable people or people with a poor mobile signal.

When I renewed my internet for another 18 months they offered me a new router and it has two connections for phones on the back so I guess in time my provider is going to switch to a VOIP service for the phone line. I haven't used the landline in 12 years as my mobile has unlimited minutes and texts
Someone please tell me what money is
