Hive thermostat - which better wall mounted or able to move around

I got one of these installed along with a hub and the smartphone Hive app.  (All much easier than what I had before.)

I have a boiler which is not combi so heating and water are separate.  The house is 4 bed but not zoned as I am a single.  I have separate non-smart radiator thermostats i.e. 0-5.

The engineer fitted the thermostat to the wall where the orginal had been - in the hall.  I have since learnt that you can actually not have them fixed but can move it around.

Is there any advantage to moving it around?

  • It depends on the location and nature of your hall. Is it fairly central, or a bit draughty etc? It might make more sense to locate it in your living room.

Do you spend much time in the hall? Personally I don't so I don't see much point in having the thermostat there, so the hall is kept at a cool temperature (probably around 12 - 15c) and the thermostat is either in the lounge or the office, where I spend most of my day.

I like moving my thermostat - means I can turn the radiators down in the living room and move the thermostat to where I am working from home, or in bed ill, or...  How fastened to the wall is it?  Is it just on clips you can lift off?

Hive just has a button at the bottom to press to lift it off the wall.

When we had new boiler & Hive installed just over a year ago, installer suggested leaving stat in the hall in our 4 bed detached bungalow. Hall isn’t huge with only a very small external wall, protected by a DG porch. Hall warmed up very quickly, turning off the boiler so the rest of the house was always cold, regardless of individual room non smart TRVs.

We moved stat into the main living room and have been able to tweak the stat & individual TRVs to heat the rooms we need to heat, and keep the others @ min 15C, which suits us.

I would experiment with the stat in different rooms. Even if you don’t have smart meters (my latest obsession😊) you can see how long the CH has been on & work out the cost.

If you do decide to move it around make sure to set any TRV(s) in the same room as the Hive 'stat to max.

I really don't understand why thermostats get fitted in the hall so frequently  - you don't spend much time there. We have our Hive thermostat in the dining room - sometimes that gets too hot as it's next to kitchen,  but can also be cold as it joins our extension, so it's useful to keep the temperature constant.
We also have thermostats on most radiators.  Best to experiment and see what works for you.

It is usually one of the coolest places so you can use that as a base temp. & control the ceiling temp of other, hotter rooms with TRV(s).
In an ideal world all radiators would be perfectly sized & balanced but in the real world rarely so.
  • I can lift it off to change the batteries but the back plate is then left on the wall.  The kit came with 2 back plates - I suspect the second one would enable me to move it around.

I am a single household and the room I sit in/game in/watch TV in has a wood burning stove which is lit during late afternoon/evening.

I suspect that probably the thermostat is OK in the hall - have it set to 16C - old analogue one was set to 14C.  I like cool bedroom and the hot water setting feeds certain radiators in bathroom, upstairs and kitchen.  We inherited that but actually it is an advantage.

The wood burning stove is obviously a heat source that the thermostat cannot control but would affect it so I recommend not puting the thermostat in that room whilst the stove is in use.
