Leaving TalkTalk broadband

My contract with TalkTalk expires on 20th this month but I am only being offered a changeover date by Vodaphone, the new ISP, of 24th. How will TT charge for those 4 days 20th - 24th ? Do they cut me off, do they charge for a full month or charge for only the 4 days till the new ISP takes over ?

I emailed TT a 30 day notice of intention to change ISP a week or so ago although they only need a 17 day notice period if you are coming to the end of your contract.

Also, for some strange reason Vodaphone, the new ISP I'm thinking of moving to will not let me keep my existing LandLine number. Their application process says the number doesn't tally with my house address, even though it's been the same number for the last 24 years. So they want me to get a new LandLine number, which is no big deal as I never use it anyway. I'm just puzzled why they want me to change the number. Any ideas ?

thanks

Your contract doesn't end on the 20th.  The minimum term finishes then.  On that date the contract becomes a rolling 30 contract with whatever the outside of minimum term price is.  You will have told this when signing up.

What happens is that TalkTalk will keep supplying your internet access until the switch.  At some point on the switchover date you will lose internet access.  When this happens you change over to the router supplied by your new ISP, or if you use your own router update the relevant log in details.  Then at some point you will get internet access again.  You may well be without internet access for a few hours during the switch.

TalkTalk will bill you for the full month after the minimum term ends.  After you switch suppliers TalkTalk will refund pro rata the money paid for the time after the switchover.  This will happen automatically so don't delete the direct debit until the billing has been sorted.

When switching ISPs (apart from/to Virgin) you do not contact the ISP you are leaving.  You just sign up with the new one you have chosen and the switch process takes care of the notification.  This has been the case for several years now.

There have been a number of threads on here recently about moving from TT to the likes of Vodafone or Shell where the transfer of the existing landline has been overly complex and time consuming for the customer.

The number should be transferrable and you need to get that agreed to start with from Vodafone. They have to request the number is transferred from the TT assignment to Vodafone's. Many have been passed back and forth with Vodafone saying TT have to do it and TT saying Vodafone have to. I believe it is Vodafone and some have been able to request it before migrating and it happening, some it hasn't happened for and they and others have had to re-request it post migration and some have not even been successful there and have had to put in a complaint to get it to transfer. Even then some have failed to get it moved.

I would have a search for some of those threads and see what action people have taken in more detail.

As mentioned, it is Vodafone that you contract with and they deal with notifying TT that you are migrating away and when. TT then deal with the billing side to the date of migration.
  • Hi, I spoke to Vodaphone and they confirmed the Landline number is being retained by either TalkTalk or BT. Apparently they are reluctant to transfer hard-wired telephone numbers to new customers who use Fibre broadband. Instead the new landline number is allocated by the ISP, and not BT, and is a Soft number using Fibre.
As I don't use the LL number I opted to let Vodaphone give me a new Soft number instead.

thanks for the replies, you clarified things for me.

In your case the phone number is unimportant, so getting a different number isn’t a problem , TBH , you probably could get broadband service without any telephony at all , and save a few ££, but for some it could be an issue , the reason VF gave you is nonsense, either VF just don’t want to port the number ,  or don’t have the necessary processes , procedures and infrastructure in place to do it ( but they should, it’s required that they should be able to do it )
If they simply state  you cannot bring your phone number with you  …it’s then your choice , you either still join , or you don’t ….OFCOM , who supposedly mandate that number portability should be available , don’t seem unduly concerned about this, so VF take advantage.
As you are with TT , your number is not BT DV , you don’t say if it were originally a BT number that you successfully ported to TT in the past , if it was never ported from BT , then BT are not involved in any way , even if BT had the number originally,  then ported your number to TT , you moving from TT to VF doesn’t involve BT
