Its interesting that gas is considered more important than electric.
I find it odd they would shut down gas power stations in favour of keeping gas going to homes.0 -

I think it's something to do with the safety and logistics of turning off gas supply. Not easy to switch back on.How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)1 -
Thanks will look for themQrizB said:Saga said:Recommendations for a decent 1.5L thermos flask pls?If you don't want to take pot luck with random unknown brands, Stanley flasks have a good reputation (although not especially cheap).I'm not sure if they do a 1.5 litre size, but there's a 1.4 or a 1.9 litre of either of those would work for you?

For me, this is where some modernisation of laundry techniques could save a lot more money.Sea_Shell said:Ironing socks!!??!! 🤣😱
Seriously though, I did a few bits the other day and thought "phew, I'm getting warm doing this".
NSS, it's a 2800w iron I'm wielding about!!!
We need to embrace our creases!!
I've not had a tumble drier since around 2003 when I fell out with my washer/dryer combo and I have a family of 4 children, now 18+ but never needed one in all those years and my kids do all their own washing and probably don't even know why anybody would use one.
Never owned an iron in my life, last used one about 1998, Don't think my kids would know what they are used for.
Just sell/recycle your iron and tumble driers and you will save a lot of money, not just in electricity costs but the capital to buy those old-fashioned devices.
Buy non-iron clothing materials, get the washing straight out of the machine, hang it up on a hanger or clothes rack, job done.
And your clothes will look better and last longer by not being heated up, tumbled about and scorched by an iron every time they are washed.1 -

I find it odd they would shut down gas power stations in favour of keeping gas going to homes.... because of this...
We have recently experienced the replacement of the majority of our local gas supply pipes, and part of that protocol requires a safety check for each house before the gas supply is restored...Sea_Shell said:

Yay, I finally found someone else who doesn't use an iron. I've never used one in my life and never will.[Deleted User] said:Sea_Shell said:Ironing socks!!??!! 🤣😱

Can't beat a freshly ironed cotton t-shirt.
Even putting it straight on a hanger isn't the same.
(IMO 😉)How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)3 -
The reason for this has been covered above, but I'll add that cutting the electricity supply to domestic properties will also dramatically reduce the gas usage at the same time as most gas central heating systems need electricity to operate (mine does). This doesn't necessarily mean less gas will be used though, as I suspect it will lead to heating up their homes more beforehand to compensate, and then back on again once power is restored. Cutting electricity will probably be more likely to actually reduce total electricity usage I should think, from more discretionary usage like games consoles, TVs etc.Chrysalis said:Its interesting that gas is considered more important than electric.
