Heat network meter serial number
I live in a block of flats with a communal heating system, which is metered.
We are still trying to find out exactly where the meters are, as they are not in an obviously visible place.
Our bills show what they claim are actual readings from the meter, but the meter does not have a serial number; more precisely, the serial number for every meter is shown as 00000000.
I am wondering how the company can tell which meter belongs to which flat (and how we can tell) with that numbering.
We also have meters for hot water, but these meters are visible in our flats and have distinct serial numbers.

Sounds like a question for the building management company...What sort of heating controls do you have in the flat? ... any chance there is a usage display there?0

Yes, but the building management know less than they should, which is why I am interested in others' experience.
We have a good controller (Mitsubishi, I think) but it does not show actual usage.0 -
If you have nt found the meter room/s/cupboardsd start thinking in terms of basements. I ve had to search them out many times as a meter reader and found them even in underground car parks attached to the block of flats and had to go through trapdoors to cellars.0

Ours is outside the building, in a locked room next to the back doorDo you have a notice board up in the lobby? Ours has a plan of the building that shows where the meter is0

Thanks for useful replies.
It's not just the location of the meters that concerns me.
But how can the billing company be sure which meter is which as they all seem to have the same serial number.0 -

But how can the billing company be sure which meter is which as they all seem to have the same serial number.Just because the meter number isn't on the bill, doesn't mean they don't have numbers on the meters correctly linked to your flat number...... but yes, the number really should be on the bill...

In my building the meters are in each flat's utility cupboard, attached to the HIU.0

Have you compared the billed amounts with neighbours? Do you all pay different amounts or could it be the cost is simply divided equally between all flats?Barnsley, South Yorkshire

I had a similar thought, but there could be other factors like number of bedrooms or Sq Ft etc. so might need to compare identical flats to be sure, but that shouldn't be hard to do...Alnat1 said:Have you compared the billed amounts with neighbours?
