That has been standard for many years, prices charged are those at the time of delivery.  All in the T&Cs.  One reason why Tesco web prices show on a Tuesday when they take effect on Wednesday.

That is certainly how Tesco operate and I assume it’s the same with most supermarkets.

    From the Tesco website:

Please note that the prices on our Grocery website and app are guide prices only. The actual price you pay will be the price charged in-store at the time your order is picked for delivery. The actual order value cannot be determined until the day of delivery because the prices stated on the website may vary either above or below the prices in-store on the day your order is picked and delivered.

When your order is delivered you may return any item and receive a full refund if you are unhappy with the price charged or for any other reason.

  • It's not the same for all, but probably most.

Ocado honour the price at the time of adding to basket..

Ocado are not really a supermarket though, they are just an online retailer so they do have more control over their stock and pricing in a way. Whereas the supermarkets charge the online shoppers the same price as the walk-in shoppers on the day its picked.

The subject came up on this board a few months ago, and I think the concensus was that most (all?) of the supermarkets say that they will charge whatever price is effective on the actual day of delivery, whether that be higher or lower than when the order was originally placed.

  • Thanks everyone for the useful responses!

I'm disappointed that the supermarket can do this, but if it's in the T&C then it is fair enough. It only added a few pounds to the overall cost of a large order. I was just pretty annoyed at seeing all their price increases when I hadn't expected them.

Agreed, we have shopped main shop at tesco online since covid and prices change they warn you

However, Tescos Clubcard prices are good until the 'end' date

    Thanks

Asda do not charge the extra unless you update your order after the price increase. When I have gone to amend my order I have a warning about anything that has increased in price. If I am not bothered about the extra things I am adding I cancel the amends and am charged the old price. I have not had a delivery for a few weeks so it may have changed.

Thank you, very helpful. I like others assumed all did it.
In fairness to tesco, they do warn you in big easy to read warning. They doubled their profits last year
    Thanks
  • I've only done an online shop twice,

1st I shopped through Sainsbury's and went through Quidco and received £12 back,

2nd time was Ocado with a £25 off  voucher I think, also went through Quidco and received another £2 back.

Presumably in the same vein that price charged is that on day of delivery, not on adding to basket where you may miss out on some offers, if items added weren't on offer at ordering but were on delivery then you'd benefit from that?
