Utility Warehouse - Is it too good to be true?

So I've just spoken to a friend who does 'network marketing' for Utility Warehouse. I am well aware of their reputation and have just read the article here on them, however unless I am missing something their electricity and gas is considerably cheaper than competitors.

I am currently with EON and my details are:

GAS
  • Standing Charge: 28.48 p/day
  • Price Per Unit: 14.72 p/kWh
ELECTRICITY
  • Standing Charge: 42.68 p/day
  • Price Per Unit: 53.16 p/kWh

The price UW are quoting is:

GAS
  • Standing Charge: 26.648 p/day
  • Price Per Unit: 10.294 p/kWh
ELECTRICITY
  • Standing Charge: 41.06 p/day
  • Price Per Unit: 35.313 p/kWh
That is just for gas and electricity and not with other services.

Am I missing something here - is there any reason not to take this? Aside from the fact they seem to have a poor reputation for customer service...

Those aren’t actually your current rates with E.ON.

Are you on a fix or on flex? And what region? I assume paying by DD?

Those are the rates according to my account, looking at the app now.

I am on EON Next Flex, paying by DD in the South-East.

As a general rule the only people who speak particularly positively about UW are those who will potentially earn from that positivity. If they were actually going to be cheaper I’d still urge you to be cautious going with them, if they’re not, then I’d suggest you avoid them like the plague!

The eon rates will be updated in a few days. Wait until then.

I know, that is my concern!

The app is showing the old October OFGEM cap rates, not the EPG rates.

I expect you to actually be charged 42.68p/day and 35.32p/kWh for your electricity, 28.48p/day and 10.296p/kWh for your gas based on the details you have given.

Ah ok, thank you. I just presumed the app had been updated, I obviously didn't look into it closely enough, I appreciate your replies.
  • They will have changed compared to yesterday, just changed to the wrong thing.  It’s confused a lot of people today, you’re not alone.

Still waiting for my tariff rates to be updated (also with Eon.Next).
With UW, I believe they also want you to switch another utility across to them (i.e. phone or broadband) and you suddenly find that the deal isn't as good as you were lead to believe. Current advice from most pundits is to stay with your existing supplier if you are on the standard variable rate. All the other suppliers will be charging the same SVT (within a fraction of a penny or two), and the few suppliers taking new customers will only really want to do so on even more expensive fixed deals.

Her courage will change the world.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.
