Births in UK

Options
I have been having an argument with my wife over the number of births per day in UK
There are approximately 750,000 births in UK each year
I claim that the number of births per day is approximately 2000 per day
My wife says that there are other factors involved but what are they?
The whole thing started with her telling me that not many people were born on her birthday
I disagreed and told her that the same number were born on my birthday (approximately)

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

there are peaks and troughs in the births in this country - more in September, fewer in March - there are also more births on weekdays than weekends owing to inductions etc.

I'd say you are correct that on average there are about 2000 births a day if there are 750k in a year.  Simple math.

The only reason I would think that there are less people born on her birthday is if her birthday is 29th Feb as on average there are 1/4 the number of people born on that day compared to any other.

But I'm assuming you know if this applies to her.....

Its from 2015 but shows you that some months are more popular than others with September being having the most births per day.

  • I'd say there are different varying factors,  when I was talking to one midwife when in hospital she said Christmas day was very typically the quietest day of the year.

The day my son was born there were 6 times as many boys born as girls.  So go figure!  Unfortunately the statistics which depend on human behaviour are not that dependable.

There may an average of 2000 a day but that does not mean that exactly 2000 births happen on each day.

When we had the 3 day week there was a surge in birth numbers 9 months later.

Well of course you have to consider whether the births are live or not.

The Office for National Statistics says -

"In 2021, there were 624,828 live births, an increase of 1.8% compared with 2020 (613,936). However, the number of live births in 2021 is lower than the number of pre-coronavirus (COVID-19) births in 2019 and is in line with the long-term trend of decreasing live births."

    Per the following link -

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/livebirths/bulletins/birthsummarytablesenglandandwales/2021#:~:text=In 2021, there were 624,828,trend of decreasing live births

But I think it's really sad that you and your wife are wasting precious time arguing about such a silly thing when you could be doing other things together. Going for a walk, having a laugh, chatting about other things that are more important to the pair of you.

This is just a very silly argument with variable results. Cook a special meal for yourselves, forget this nonsense, it really isn't important, is it?  :/

Some days there will be more, some days there will be less.

Guess 2055 could be average, some months might be busier than others for example mid-November (9 months after valentines day)

What a very odd thing to argue about, and your wife is correct, sorry!

STATISTICALLY, you have a "normal" distribution, so on average you will get 2000 births a day, but this is going to vary within a certain range.

But as humans are not robots, then the factors involved are alcohol (drunken s*x on New Years Eve and Christmas results in a lot of pregnancies so 9 months after this date e.g. September there are FAR more births!). A new year is often a time where people decide to start trying for a baby, so more September to December births.

Apparently September 26th is the day with the most birthdays! (The other top 10 dates are also in September and beginning of October).

Also, when temperatures are VERY cold, people are known to er... snuggle up more to keep warm!

Also, if you're having a C-Section or induced birth, these won't generally take place on bank holidays unless it's an emergency, so less babies on bank holidays.

April has the lowest birth rate in the UK. Too hot in summer for bedroom action apparently...!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
