I live halfway up an Alp at 1000m in Austria. The houses here are properly insulated so even in the depths of winter when it is -20 outside we use 4.5 tog duvets. I have never seen an electric blanket here (not really looked mind). Beds here are often superking size with 2 seperate (single size) matresses and seperate duvets so if you have different needs it is easy to accomplish without having to travel too far if you need a rendezvous 😉

I do recommend the wool Devon Duvets, they do all weights.  They are light and it's easy to change the duvet cover.  I use a winter weight all year round, cool in summer, warm in winter.  The difference is you warm up almost immediately.

Clearly in a minority of one here. Would never go down to 4.5 tog duvet - too cold even in the summer. And I was firmly in the 13 tog level plus blanket for winter.
I’ve gone for wool duvets now. I got a Dunelm all season one in the sale, but it wasn’t warm enough for me for winter so I’ve gone for a proper better quality winter one and I swap the two around. Been lovely and warm ever since. I’m allergic to down the wool ones seem to have been okay for me.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

We have an All Seasons Down and Feather - 4.5 + 9 tog, we've recently swapped the 4.5 for the 9, it'll have to be very cold for us to put them both together.  No heating in bedroom.

  • I must be a wimp. I have a 13.5 all seasons duvet for about 9 months of the year, and use just the 4.5 tog part for 3 months in the year! I always have the window open for some air. If anyone suffers a cool mattress, I recommend Devon Duvets Mattress Topper. It's brilliant.

The other thing to consider is how many people in the bed.  (not expecting several of course....)

OH & I swap sometimes between having 1 superking 10 tog one or having 2 single 4 tog ones.  Singles make a lot of sense as I like to roll up in mine and the OH is forever flinging his off completely as too hot.  There's also the thing about one large duvet that means if I want my feet uncovered (most nights) it means the duvet shifts to an odd angle which gets the OH harrumphing.

We've been contemplating two duvets as OH is forever yanking the duvet so that is straight and makes a wind tunnel. We weren't sure whether we'd need doubles or if two singles would do.

We like the Scandinavian style as seen on The Bridge etc.

I use the same duvet all year round, as I use a weighted blanket - but I do have cotton sheets and covers for summer, then fleece ones for winter - it does make a big difference.

We're a duvet each couple and both have doubles in a king-size bed. It's luxurious and comfortable, and it's very rare that I kick mine off then steal his. But it has happened.

I'd say it has a lot to do with how big you are....OH (big lad) really needs a double to himself but tends to throw the duvet off so isn't fussed.  I like to think I manage nicely with a single but would need a double to properly cocoon.

Currently use a 13.5 all year round but it's a bit old so is probably not working anything like its tog rating.
This thread has prompted me to get a new one so I've gone for a cheap Tesco 10.5 one so we'll see how that goes.
Also, why has nobody yet posted a link to Rhod Gilbert - Duvets?
