I just put the summer one in the cover the other day, previous to that it was a duvet cover on it's own as a sort of top sheet.  So 4.5 for a good while yet - it's a down in lots of pockets kinda gig - then maybe a thin fleece on top if it comes cold, then maybe the big winter jobber.
I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.

We have a duvet consisting of two detachable layers.  One is 4.5 and the other 9.  We have never used the two together even in the coldest winters.

7.5tog year round for me - we also have a super thick drapey American duvet which I think is at least a 15tog, and which has only been used during the most recent 'beast from the east' type events which delightfully coincided with the combi packing up...

I'm just about to put my 10.5 tog duvet on. Most of this year it's been a 4.5 tog. I have no heating on in my bedroom.

I think it depends on whether you have a partner beside you to help keep you warm.  Our duvet is 4 in summer and 6 in winter and that’s in cold Highlands.

Like Tellit my favourite was an all seasons duvet/s

10ish for spring and autumn, 4ish for summer and they joined with velchro for winter.

    Light weight hollofibre.

Changed to a warmer house and now have quilts and a duvet so I can mix and match all year

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

The other thing to consider is how many people in the bed.  (not expecting several of course....)

OH & I swap sometimes between having 1 superking 10 tog one or having 2 single 4 tog ones.  Singles make a lot of sense as I like to roll up in mine and the OH is forever flinging his off completely as too hot.  There's also the thing about one large duvet that means if I want my feet uncovered (most nights) it means the duvet shifts to an odd angle which gets the OH harrumphing.

Many people are worried about their heating bills  and are expecting to cut back on their usage this winter, if that is the case it stands to reason that mattresses will be cooler. If in that situation it would be beneficial to put a blanket between mattress and sheet to help keep cozy.

Op, I think it would be better to buy a blanket or fleece and duvet rather than two duvets.

I'm also a woman of a certain age so I'm still using a 1-tog duvet, but might consider the 4.5-tog if we get a truly Arctic January.  :D
    I feel seen  :D

I switched from the 1 tog to the 4.5 tog last week but I do sleep with the window open!  If we get the arctic January, I'll stick with the 4.5 but just shut the window.
