Do I need to submit a reading today if I have a smart meter, and if so what readings do the want?

I have seen and heard all the advice to send in an electricity reading today, but do I do this even if I have a smart meter?

Also how do I do it?

I have an Economy 10 Smart Meter from SSE, it has two buttons on the right hand side of the screen, A and B.
The screen displays a reading called "Rate 02 Act Imp" and displays a number, but I cannot find the other rate.

If the A button is held down for a few seconds it displays more including one called "Total Act Imp" which gives another reading, is this the other reading I need, as cannot find a reading called "Rate 01".

Thank you.

  • If your bills show smart meter readings then you do NOT need to provide manual readings.

Your IHD shows the total of the 4 registers (indexes) in a smart meter. There is no convention on which of the 4 registers is peak. Most E7 tariffs are set up with R1 as peak and R2 as offpeak but my smart meter is set as R1 offpeak and R2 offpeak.

Which model of electricity smart meter do have?

The smart meter itself is a Landis + Gyr.

Check your bills against meter readings to determine which register is which. It should be pretty obvious that the readings will be different.

When you've done that make sure that the meter registers do actually line up with peak and off peak consumption by checking which ones increment during off-peak periods.

Finally, make sure that the supplier has actually been using smart meter readings to bill you rather than estimates. The fact that you've got a smart meter doesn't always mean that the supplier is using it to bill you properly.

I've got a smart meter but I still check the bills against readings to ensure that they are accurate.

I shall also be sending in a manual read this evening because I dont actually trust them to take a smart meter reading today, and I dont want to end up paying the increased tariff for leccy that I've already used.

I may be a cynical old fart, but I like to make sure stuff is being done correctly, rather than hoping and then having to pick it all out in the future if it's gone wrong.

I have a smart meter that was installed a few weeks ago by Octopus, They emailed me a bill up to 28th September so only 2 days usage before the price increase. Do I need to send a reading or will they just split my next bill automatically.

    They should split it.
Did you agree to let them read your smart meter daily? If so, you should be able to see daily consumption and cost charts on your Octopus account.

  • Reading a L&G SMETS2 meter:

To take two rate meter readings from your Landis and Gyr SMETS2 electricity meter:

    • Press the green A button until you see ‘Rate 01 Act Imp’ – this is your first reading
    • Press and hold the grey B button for 5 seconds, and then press the green A button until you see ‘Rate 02 Act Imp’ – this is your second reading.

I'm on a prepayment meter (not smart), the advice from British Gas was no need, but I am anyway - will not let me select today's date though.

    Thank You for the replies.

Good suggestion matelodave - I will have to wait for the next bill as the current one still has details of the previous tariff on it and confuses the issue.

Dolor - thank you for that reply, the meter reads "Rate 02 Act Imp", but no "Rate 01 Act Imp.  However if I hold the A button down I get to access other setting/readings, one of these is "Total Act Imp" which appears to show an different Kw/h reading, so maybe that is the other rate.  This second reading is the same as the reading on the IHD device.

    Thank You.

"Total" is the total of Rates 01 and 02 (and potentially 03 and 04 too). It's possible that Rate 01 is Total less Rate 02, but that's an assumption.
