Accidental 'free' data and calls...is it to good to be true?

  • Thanks Virgo, simax and 400ixl....

I agree, best to double check and hope that theres a simple answer.

Just called them but couldn't get through on the 202 number which is what you call from the mobile in question, so needed to call from my landline instead.
Spoke to a lovely lady and explained that I wanted to know if I had any contract with them because O2 had stopped taking monies from my account on the 24th month of the contract in February 2022, and that the MyO2 app said that I had zero products with them ....but I wanted to double check.

She advised that I had zero contract with them of any type and in fact they owed me £1.38 which she offered to repay to my account !!
I asked twice if there was anything due but she said no. She did advise that my number had been 'ported' at the end of the contract....which is odd because I've never ported the number to anyone else.

I'm still using it daily and its operated exactly the same as it has done for the past 2 years.

Really not sure what this means, because there's nothing different in any way, my calls come in ok....go out ok...data works ok...everything is perfect.
    Any ideas.

The risk is for you to assess.

Carry on using it and they could in the future realise they have been supplying services and come after you for up to 6 years worth of payments as they will have evidence of it being in use.

Carry on using it and they never realise and you continue to get free services

Get yourself a new contract and put that sim card in your phone. If they believe you have ported the number, it may not be possible to get a PAC code to transfer the number to the new sim (and requesting one may also trigger them realising they are providing a service).

You could mitigate some of the risk by putting the money for the contract away in a savings account in case they do come after you. It will build interest if they don't.

202 not working would support that the number was ported out.

Does voicemail work and if so is it O2’s voicemail?
  • Hi all,

Yes, its O2's voicemail and the text to say i have a missed call says O2 in the header....weird!!

I reckon I'm just going to call again and say that I've not ported anything, just in case there's some kind of super dodgy fraud thing going on....life's too short to be messing around with looking over a shoulder...🙄

Many, many thanks as always for everyone's help.

Interesting thought, so is the contract actually with someone else now and the OP is paying for it (or not) there.

O2 allow migrations to pay as you go. Perhaps the operator meant migrated not ported.

The OP couldn’t get a PAC anyway as the system believes the account is closed.

It’s possible that during the account closing process, a line of code failed and this in turn kept the sim open and active on the back end systems. I expect every so often a system sweep will pick anomalies like this up and correct them so you may find the sim going offline at random in due course.

Also in regards to back-billing for the time used since closure, although it’s possible, the chances of it actually happening are as close to zero as you can get. It’s unlikely any usage is being recorded and even then if it went further, you can argue that they didn’t follow their correct processes. All that will happen in reality is that the sim will go offline at some point and that will be that.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂
