Baaaaaad design, Nest.
As to why not completely battery solution - I assume must be to do with battery life
My NEST E has a battery powered equiv of the Heatlink box (which talks to the mains powered Stat part) which goes where your old wired stat goes - the batteries on that lasted 2.5 years but they do talk about it using a particular form of very low power wi-fi method/protocol to achieve that between the stat and heatlink
USA ones are different and do have a rechargeable battery in the Stat part, but their heating wiring is very different1 -
Still a strange decision, I think, Boba.
The Hive's batteries last - I dunno - at LEAST a year, and I suspect closer to two. Impressive, when it has to not only constantly communicate with its receiver, but also the Hub. And the Mini gets away AAA to remain compact.
I'm surprised the Nest doesn't at least have one of these tiny flat rechargeables inside that could be kept topped up when plugged in, but still easily allow a few day's or more use away from a socket. Weird, I think.0 -

But, still on first set of batteries, and even alkalines are very cheap these days (so much so, that I've given up on rechargeables :-( ), and very pleased with the Hives in general.0
