Personally I would want to be across 2 banks and preferably across two payment processors (Visa / Mastercard / Amex).

Unfortunately most banks have now moved away from Visa due to fees on Mastercards being less. Apart from cards which have not expired yet, I've yet to find banks handing out Visa cards anymore. My Visa was actually replaced with a Mastercard recently.

Rubbish.  Some banks have changed from Visa to Mastercard, but by no means most of them.

Barclays, Lloyds, Halifax, Bank of Scotland, TSB, Co-operative Bank, Nationwide all offer Visa debit cards.  Even HSBC still provide Visa Debit cards, even though First Direct has changed to Mastercard.

Well, when I asked, both Barclays and HSBC said they are no longer sending out debit cards with Visa (only credit cards), only Mastercard, but existing cards would still work until they are replaced. I do have TSB Visa but didn't ask them about their future plans.

I don't know who you spoke to, but that's simply not true.  Both Barclays and HSBC are still issuing Visa debit cards, and neither of them have announced plans to change to Mastercard.  I received a new (not replacement) HSBC Visa debit card only a month ago.

    Zopa credit card is instant.

  • In app authorisation of transactions, again a little sign appears at the top of my phone, drag it down and key in my number and it goes through ok.

@mov@MovingForwards How does the Natwest app work>? Can you open it and it shows you balances etc without a pin, but requires a pin for payments (like Monzo)? Or does it require a pin even just to open, like HSBC, First Direct and many others?

Have you ever had a chance to compare the app vs those of the digital banks like Monzo, Starling etc?

    Thanks!

Neither of the apps you mention, HSBC and First Direct require a PIN for me as a fingerprint is all I need.

It is the same with NatWest and RBS apps although HSBC and FD do require a PIN from the app when opening them online.

NatWest and RBS do not need anything from the app for online banking, only selected characters from a PIN and a password in online banking.

NW and RBS do not require a PIN for payments but setting up payees and the first payment online does require use of either a card reader or face recognition within the app.

I have no experience of Monzo or Starling.

  • I use a pin to access / open the app, if making payments over a certain amount even if they're not a new payee to reconfirm it's me doing it etc.

When authorising payments for purchases the little pop up appears, I put my pin in as confirmation it's me doing the purchase, it thanks me and says to go back to the website I was on. It doesn't automatically take me to my account afterwards (I don't think).

When I'm buying things online or paying a bill online, I keep an eye on my phone for the pop up to say there's been a spend before leaving the website, even if the business emails me a receipt as sometimes that's not instant. I do a screenshot or take a photo to prove I've paid it; acts as a secondary back up and I delete it after the email is received.

New payees can be set up in the app and saved for using again, I can set up / alter / cancel standing orders, cancel or check DD's.

For me I find the app a lot easier than online banking, online banking was better than phone banking.  Occasionally I do log in just to help remember my log in details or if I'm doing a large transaction eg sending the deposit to my solicitor.

I've never used a digital only bank so can't compare them.

  • @MovingForwards Last question :) Does the Natwest app show where your transaction was on a map? For both debit and credit  cards? Monzo and Starling both do it and it's really useful to remind yourself of where you spent what. Onviously only for physical, not online stores.
  • No it doesn't, just gives a name like most other banks.

It does allow you to set budgets under things like shopping, home, health, groceries, transport, eating out etc and when a transaction is processed you can 'move' it to that budget (affectively change the transaction from being under a bill heading to an eating out heading etc). Once you've done a few the app starts to recognise what a transaction is and what heading (budget) you would put it under. It's not perfect, does sometimes need a manual move, but helps you see where income is being spent

Is there a bank which sends instant app notifications for every expense on both debit and credit cards? Is Natwest the only one? Does it work?
    Ideally, I'd like:
    • the same app to check both the bank account and the credit card
    • a traditional bank because I have heard horror stories about making large payments (house deposits, moving savings around, etc) with Monzo and the other challenger banks
    • instant push notifications via the Android app. This is useful to check fraud but also to remind myself of subscriptions and other recurring payments

HSBC send transaction notifications for both their debit and credit cards - they work fine.
