Failed credit check, confused

I have an excellent credit history and have not been denied credit for 15 years or so since being a student. I applied for a vodafone contract via mobiles.Co.U.K. and was surprised after a manual check to be declined. Probably stupidly I then tried applying for a 3 contract on the same handset (iPhone 14 pro) and was declined through another 3rd party.

What are my options? I see I can appeal the Vodafone decision but on their own website. Will this apply to the 3rd party application? Does the fact I used a 3rd party impact things, would they do their own credit checks?

im just a bit baffled. I did check things on experian today and there are no issues although I knew this already. I now can’t get a new phone unless I buy it outright. Can I even get a sim only deal or is that credit checked?

i still have my EE contract but was going to get the PAC code when the new phone (different network) arrived. Surely this isn’t an issue? My affordability monthly is fortunately very healthy and I’m using small amounts of any credit card limits, always paying off in full monthly.

Get your credit report (on all three, not just Experian) and have a good look through to see if there is anything that may have spooked the company:

Worse thing you can do is keep trying:
https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/loans/credit-rating-credit-score/#needtoknow2-9 - "The only way to know if you'll get accepted for a product is to apply. Yet that leaves a footprint on your credit file, and too many of those, especially in a short space of time, can hurt future applications."

Also two down number 11 - "Every time you apply for a credit product (be it a credit card, contract mobile phone, car insurance paid monthly or more), it adds a footprint to your file for a year.

Too many, especially in a short space of time, can trigger rejections as it makes it look like you're desperate for credit. Therefore, space out applications if you can and don't do them frivolously.

  • If you want sim only, then voxi or giffgaff do no credit checks as they are 30 day contracts
  • much the same here....had been with Vodafone with at least 15 years and had almost upgraded every year to the laest and greatest phone..

however 2 years ago they declined me credit to upgrade to a iphone 12...i wass shell shocked at decision.

Howver that decision was a turning point, went sim free and bought direcr from apple.....give it a try
