Octopus most definitely are accepting new customers onto Go/Go Faster/Intelligent. You just need a compact smart meter and an EV. They might accept an order number as proof although most people haven't been asked for evidence. In theory it's pretty easy for them to tell whether or not you're charging an EV.

You could own an EV, not need to charge it very often at home but still qualify for an EV tariff. The cheap rate times could be used to fill batteries, run washer, dryer and dishwasher.

I don't think you can have an E7 smart meter with British Gas for some reason
  • I've decided to take a risk and i am moving over to Octopus Thursday, I'm going on their variable and i have to apply to go on to their go tariff ASAP Thursday morning. They can't answer how much their tariffs will be after 1st October but i'm hoping the government cost cap will have a positive effect on their new tariffs.

    We shall wait and see.

Just to set expectation levels accordingly, assume there will be no reduction in the 'Go' tariff as it is already below the new multi-rate tariff cap.
If it turns out there is a reduction then great, but assume no change and if that still makes sense for you then welcome onboard :)

Correct... no idea why, but this has caused lots of issues during the SoLR transfers as they seem incapable of dealing with new customers already on E7 with a smart meter.

Yeah I never like to assume positively - its just not in my make up. I have a pessimistic outlook on life (be it right or wrong) but i always expect nothing / the worst and everything i gain or make on the way is a bonus....

I'm hoping the change will be worth it.. its going to be difficult going from my current fix to the new rates as I've been fixed for nearly 12 months but I've got a PHEV Ford Kuga now which will be nice and cheap to charge on the new tariff and will be programming the washing machine  / tumble dryer to come on at night too - Should be a nice saving with having 2 young kids and the washer on nearly every day.

One of the issues with a time-of-use tariff is that there is no smart meter protocol for which registers a supplier should use for billing. For example, I am on Octopus Go Faster which is a peak/offpeak tariff. Looking at the meter readings in My Account the R1 register is recording my offpeak usage and R2 peak. Fortunately, as Octopus uses neither register for billing, it isn’t an issue.

Also, I believe that there is a difference between a standard smart meter set up for E7 and a smart meter with ALCS control for a property with storage heaters on a separate circuit. I know that Octopus has deployed some ALCS meters.

Standard 4-port smart meters still have the capability for ALCS control via an external contactor in the majority of cases, the 5-port smart meters have the contactor built in.
The 4-port meters use an internal 2A switch wired to the contactor for control.
There are some SMETS2 meter manufacturers that offered variants that did not have the 2A switch, I guess BG bought a lot of those and none of the 5-port versions...
Still doesn't excuse them not having the central systems to manage ALCS equipped meters though and they were one of the first to use the multi-register capabilities with their 'free weekends' deal for early adopters of the SMETS1 meters...
