EV tariff
Hi all
First post..
I signed up to a car leasing scheme with my employer back in early January for an EV car which was due to be delivered in May but due to microchip problems the date keeps getting moved back with the current ETA being late December.
Having been excited about receiving it all year mixed with disappointment that the delivery date keeps getting moved back I now find myself questioning whether having an electric car is worthwhile due to the current electric rates.
With the electricity rate being capped at 34p per kwh from October it's clearly a lot more expensive than the rate that I was thinking it would be at the start of the year. All of the energy companies that have EV tariffs with very cheap night time charging rates (around 5p per kwh) have stopped them for new customers due to the energy crisis and I'm wondering if there is likely to be any changes to EV electric tariffs in the coming months or whether 34p per kwh is the best rate that I'm going to get.
I can cancel the contract without charge before the car is delivered so have a few months to make a decision.
Is anyone else in a similar situation and if so what have you decided to do? Ultimately I still want the car but with petrol and diesel rates going down it doesn't have any of the financial gains that it did previously.

I think you will have to wait until October to see what options there are with EV tariffs. Octopus have said that they will review their EV tariffs and will work out how to proceed with regard to the EPG and hope to take new customers in October, EDF and British Gas have closed theirs for the moment bit have not said when they expect them to reopen so it is a bit of a wait and see really, that is the best advice I can give you for the moment.1

Even if you can't get a specific EV tariff (and I'm expecting that Octopus will continue to offer them), in many cases there are boring old Economy 7 tariffs that could make a lot of sense with an EV.

Thank you both, you've given me a little hope that a cheaper rate might present itself in the coming weeks. Fingers crossed!0

No you won't see their EV tariff prices (called go electric with multiple dated versions) but you can see their Economy 7 tariff which I assume anyone with a smets2 smart meter could go onto that might work well with an EV.QrizB said:W00dy81 said:Thank you both, you've given me a little hope that a cheaper rate might present itself in the coming weeks. Also my understanding is that if you phone Octopus you can switch onto their SVR (including getting the £50 referral bonus) and then once on the SVR you can get onto their go / go faster ev tariff - in theory only EV owners only but I had heard they do not ask for proof.I think....1 -
I think I saw someone recently on here who got kicked off the go tariff for not having an EV. No idea how that would happen and I might have misread. Also my understanding is that if you phone Octopus you can switch onto their SVR (including getting the £50 referral bonus) and then once on the SVR you can get onto their go / go faster ev tariff - in theory only EV owners only but I had heard they do not ask for proof.1 -
Was just about to post the same, ring octopus. They definitely still offer the cheap rate for EV owners, although it's about 7.5p per kw.michaels said:

Unfortunately I don’t think that is correct, It would seem you still need an E7 smart meter for E7.michaels said:

https://octopus.energy/help-and-faqs/articles/what-happens-to-my-economy-seven-e7-tariff-when-i-have-a-smart-meter-installed/Not sure what you are reading in that link which would suggest that?Any SMETS2 meter can be remotely configured to operate a 2 rate E7 tariff, that is a trivial setup change. The only complexity is if you have an old E7 meter which controls a switched circuit for NSH or an immersion, then when you replace that with a smart meter you either need a 5-port meter, or a normal 4-port meter with an external contactor controlled by the built in ALCS facility in the meter.

That link literally says that the new smart meter can do E7, but just warns that it is fixed to 00:30 - 07:30 UTCKeep_pedalling said:
