Own Domain with Gmail

Due to previously owning a company, now wound up, I have a Domain name, and use a hosted email service. I would like to continue using the Domain name for emails, but was wondering if I could use a free service e.g. Gmail behind it (so email address would be xxx@mydomain.com rather than xxx@gmail.com). I would prefer to keep a record of my emails on my pc as well (I know Gmail will keep a copy, but that doesn't worry me)

Last time I looked it seemed just about possible, but a faff to set up an manage.

Does anybody do this?

I registered a couple of domain names years ago.  Back then email hosting was an expensive extra, so I used my free GMX email account.  In those days, you could just set the "from" email address in your email client to your domain address.

These days, domestic ISPs make it almost (if not completely) impossible to use their SMTP servers to send mail with your own domain address in the "from" field.

The basic email hosting plans that domain registrars often provide are barely any more expensive than the charge for registering a domain.  With hosted email, you get access to SMTP servers, which makes it much easier to send messages from any device.

I pay £1 a month for email hosting, which includes domain registration fees.

  • Thanks.
Yes, you are probably correct. I have 5 mailboxes, so costs somewhat more, and I pay for 2 years at a time. But it will not break the bank...

Not sure why you want to get gmail involved?
I have my own domain (with ionos) and use Thunderbird on my PC (and K9 on my phone) which are both free, to access emails.

Yes it's possible but as you say is a bit of an effort to set up. Just search for how to do it with your domain host.

A possible compromise is to set up your domain email to forward to your Gmail so you get all your emails in Gmail but if you reply it will come from Gmail.

Yes, I can 'spoof' it, but the result is not great. It would be useful if I was migrating to another provider/address, but it's not a long term solution.

I will stick with what I have.
  • When Google Apps was free I set up an account and had several email addresses using my domain. Worked beautifully (and still does) but Google decided to start charging. I've had it for free for many years though so can't really complain!! £2.50 per account per month now (discounted rate) but going to the full Google Apps pricing next year. I need to look around to see if there's a better option as I'm only using it for email.
  • I have had google apps for years, it is still going strong and is still free.

    @womble12345  Apologies - I meant Google Workspace.
  • I do this, I have multiple domains and I send and receive emails through them via Gmail without any issues. I just set up email forwarding to receive mail and use SMTP to send from the accounts.

5 mins to set it all up.
  • Thanks.
    1) Yes, I am aware Google Workspace use to do it as a feature, but GW now costs.

    2) I set up one of my mailboxes as tallmansix describes awhile back, but was not entirely happy with the result (can't remember why) and changed back. Maybe I will experiment again.
