Claim Travel Expenses

Hiya

All students studying an HNC/HND and Degree course can from today apply to have their travel expenses paid for this year.

If you are a UK national or family member of such a national and your home is in the EU, EEA or Switzerland, and you are eligible to apply to us for your main support, we may also pay the cost of your travel between your home and term-time address at the start and end of each term or semester.
If your home is outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland , we will only pay for travel costs to and from the point of departure and arrival in the United Kingdom

see www.saas.gov.uk for more details.

AND.......most important, its free. This does not get paid back. Takes about 21 days to get paid into your bank account. If anyone needs anymore information, give me a shout.

  • Oh, about time! With train prices going up half my loan is going on bloody Zonecards!

SAAS can be a bit picky about what they give and to whom. Last year a friend of mine who shells out roughly £120 per month on tickets was offered £25. Yes, £25!
  • Yes £25 - thats more than £0
  • is this just for Scottish students?

Ingnore me have been and had a look. It's a shame the gentlemen who've occupied No 10 aren't as generous!

Yes it is better than nothing, but when she, like me, pays out about half her loan to train tickets she might as well have been offered nothing. Must have stung a bit that I was being offered expenses and she wasn't.
  • I'm sure the £120 on tickets is pretty much her choice though. She could live nearer her HE institute or go back home less frequently.

She stays at home because it works out to be less than half the price of living nearer the university.
  • why does the site choose to go down on the day we claim back our expenses? bl**dy typical.

Just my luck.  I don't think me checking every 5 minutes is going to help either. lol

therefore she must have factored in the travel costs and so is better off than other students who have to live near the university - nothing to moan about is it?

It's probably down with everyone trying to get in to it. It doesn't seem to want to accept me so it looks like I'll probably have to end up making another (I had to do it last year too) account.

Blacksheep, no, she was expecting to get most of it back, like everyone else did. Most were getting the maximum or close to it. Yes, she knew she'd have to pay for the train tickets and had kept part of her loan aside for it, but because she never got anything back more of her loan than she would have liked was eaten up by it.

Everyone knows they should get something back for travel costs, and most do get a decent amount back. That's why most students don't factor in not getting something.
  • working fine now.
