Some card providers for example lloyds will take the statement amount no matter what - so for example if you make a payment after the statement they will still direct debit the full statement amount

other card providers and I believe barclays is one of them adjust the direct debit according to what has happened since the statement - for example if you have made a payment or received a refund
This is not the case. Lloyds will actually NOT take the DD at all if you make a payment like a BT. I have had this confirmed both by the fact the DD was not taken after a BT and on the phone with their staff. An example would be a £1000 statement balance, a £900 BT off the card and the DD should take £100 but in fact takes nothing and you have to make a manual payment

As I recall the last time I looked at my Barclaycard online there was the option for minimum DD, set amount DD or full balance.

I suggest you should select full balance and then take a screen shot.  Let the month roll by and see what happens.  If they don't take the full amount and you end up being charged interest then you have the grounds to complain.  If they take a smaller amount for some reason as others have suggested and you don't get charged interest then what you do will depend on whether this is a satisfactory situation to you.  (i.e. better to have the ££ in your account a month longer)
