So 75p for a ten minute shower at the new capped rates? Electric shower seems a touch cheaper then, depending on kw of the shower? Just thinking, may be close to the stage where on-demand hot water is cheaper using electric than gas (and a lot cheaper using a heat pump), just thoughts for my next house renovation where am tempted to go for a wood burner for heating and all electric otherwise (personally don't use any hot water myself but won't go down well with estate agents if I ever want to sell).
I wonder if what “goes down well with estate agents” will change as more people take interest in energy.  It wasn’t too long ago that they were saying PV knocked thousands off your house price, but I would be surprised if that’s true now.

Do you need a 10 minute shower?
If your organised and efficient 4-5 minutes is long enough for a shower. Halving the energy costs.

My 23kW Worcester combi boiler uses 1.7kWh for a 5 minute shower which includes 1 minute for the water to run hot - I don't use the preheat setting.

So, about 12.5p on the April 22 prices.
Do Money Saving sites make you buy more bargains - and spend more money?

  • I'd finger in the air put them at half hourly segments, so it shows you used 7.5kWh in half an hour,

Some calculations for the current cap are here.

I'll re-work the post once the rates for the EPG tariff are finalised.

My 2-3m shower from a 20 year old Worcester combi uses just 0.8 kWh according to Loop.  I’m having a brand new more energy efficient 28kw Alpha installed in a couple of weeks. Will be interesting to see the difference to heating costs this winter.
  • I was a bit bored this morning, here are today's shower results.

Worcester 30 CDI combi, no preheat, water output set to "E" which is 5/7, the gauge on the boiler said 60 when I finished.

20 feet of pipe from boiler to thermostatic shower.

Around 25 seconds to get the water warm enough to get in.

Total time boiler running was 5 minutes 40 seconds.

IHD said 1.75 kWh used, these readings tally with my online account once it catches up.

    Cost 1.75 x 9.692 = 16.961 pence

It seems extremely unlikely an electric shower would work out cheaper than a gas combi boiler fed one to me. Assuming water flow rates are the same.

Crikey, you really were bored!  But - how much power for a shower in an hour?
Now a gainfully employed bassist again - WooHoo!
