I seem to vaguely remember another thread on here which explained how to access the other 40g of space in the box. As far as I know, the capacity is 80g, but normally only 40g is possible to use, can't remember why exactly, is it something to do with multiroom? I might have got it all wrong, but perhaps someone can make things clearer.....

AFAIK, the other space on the new boxes is set aside mostly for Anytime TV - where they recommend programmes for you and they are downloaded for you without you having to do it. Don't know about older boxes though.

If I did take this route, what do I need to look for in a DVD recorder?

Pretty much any DVD recorder would do the job, but I would not go for a cheap recorder. Depending on your budget you may want to go for a digital PVR so you would have another hard drive to record those free to air channels which are not free on Sky, like More 4 and Dave. Many of the newer DVD recorders have upscalling and this is well worth it, but only if your TV is HDMI ready?

  • One specific feature to look for is RGB input. This means you'll record a better quality signal off the sky+ box onto DVD.

The problem is this often is not listed at all, or is sometimes incorrect on spec sheets. I have returned a number of devices which claimed support, yet did not.

I finally ended up with the wharfedale DVDRHD400F for 59.99 from argos (search google) which *has* rgb in.

It's also useful to have a variety of recording speeds, with dual layer support being useful(the wharfedale doesn't have this)

A point to bear in mind the VCR SCART on a Sky+ box does not have an RGB output, Composite Video out only.
It does have RGB in however.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
