Sky+

I've recently got sky+ and the storage is running out. Does anybody know if I can somehow hook the box up to a PC and store the recorded programs on another hard drive? It would be really helpful and I'd be glad of any advice.

only way to do it is open up the sky+ box and install a bigger hard drive. Not that hard to do.

You might want to copy all your old recorded stuff to your new hard drive before you install it, in which case you need copy+ software and a method of connecting the hard drive to your computer (IDE caddy, or openup your computer)

    hope this helps

oops, in answer to your original question, you can't hook the box up to your pc, but you can take the hard drive out and connect that. Then, you need copy+ software to copy the files to another hard drive but you'll only be able to view these recorded programs on the sky box.

..................or just transfer the one you want to keep to VHS/DVD.

  • The box can connect to VHS or DVD recorder. My friend successfully transfers to VHS on a regular basis.

Thanks for the suggestion. What kind of hard drive would I need and how would I do it? I'm not technically incompetent but have no experience of this.

I would suggest your easiest / cheapest / best option would be to download to DVD via a DVD recorder.

You would be doing it very much at your own risk. I was lucky, and it worked fine. Its also worth considering that you'll end up with two hard drives, and to view either you'll have to open up your Sky box again and swop them over, as a PC will not be able to read it. Im not really convinced that this is the solution that you are looking for.

If I did take this route, what do I need to look for in a DVD recorder?

I seem to vaguely remember another thread on here which explained how to access the other 40g of space in the box. As far as I know, the capacity is 80g, but normally only 40g is possible to use, can't remember why exactly, is it something to do with multiroom? I might have got it all wrong, but perhaps someone can make things clearer.....

If its a new box then you will always loose 40GB to sky no matter how much you have. Putting in a new hard drive will void any warranty on the box. Even if you turn off anytime it still retains the 40GB. I have an older version with a 500GB hard drive fitted in it and dont loose anything to sky.
