Boiler Scrappage Scheme

Hi, I installed my venerable (60% efficient) boiler around 35 years ago!  It’s simple design makes it easy to service, long lasting BUT it’s vastly inefficient!

Anyone know if there is likely to be a new Boiler Scrappage Scheme?

  • That's far too sensible an idea for this government.
And it doesn't benefit Shell or BP, so what's in it for them?

Sorry - but I think you missed the boat on schemes that previously help fund replacement of inefficient gas boilers with modern condensing ones.  The only scheme in town is the Heat Pump replacement grant https://www.gov.uk/guidance/check-if-you-may-be-eligible-for-the-boiler-upgrade-scheme-from-april-2022

If you are committed to a getting heat pump then it might help, but it depends really on the house (how well insulated) and your usage as to whether it works out financially. The general consensus is that at the moment for the majority it cheaper to pay in full for replacement gas boiler, at today high gas prices, it might well reduce you payback time going from inefficient to one to a condensing boiler (which are 95% efficient when setup correctly).

Given that the government is trying to get people off fossil fuels, I don't think they will be too keen to offer subsidies to install more gas boilers.  If you want a subsidy now, it has to be a heat pump.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

If your household income is less than 30k a year (savings are not taken into account other than interest received) then there are schemes to replace old boilers with heat pumps and increase insulation for free (councils should have links to take you to the right place, there are other grants that cover some of the cost - to get the freebie, search ECO4 and name of your council on google)

The local authority delivery of green homes grant schemes refereed to requires your EPC to D or lower details of how that scheme is organised can be found here  https://energysavingtrust.org.uk/report/green-homes-grant-local-authority-delivery-scheme/ , same goes for ECO4 scheme with no funding if your home is EPC C or above and no meaningful measure for gas boiler replacements.

I'm in exactly the same position, my boiler is very inefficient, although my house has loft and cavity wall insulation, and is double glazed, so I'm not sure how much savings can be made. Unfortunately the old boiler is fitted on an adjoined wall to next door and I think the new boilers have to be fitted beside an outside wall, so a cupboard will have to come out!

I've asked someone to come round and give me a quote for the whole job. He's already told me he doesn't think it's worth it.

I'm amazed the government hasn't taken the opportunity to award a subsidy for new boilers.  An alternative might be to wait for a new government, although that's not certain, and I don't have much more faith in Starmer than the present lot to introduce a scrappage scheme.

They don't want new boilers - they are trying to get rid of domestic gas use as part of the net-zero plans.  That's (partially) why they are subsidising heat pumps.

Someone I know with 60k household income is getting a new boiler free from the council.  So there is schemes still running, and this particular scheme isnt means tested for some reason.

Its a postcode lottery, I think any future schemes need to be centralised run from government.

Also got a vintage boiler here (Baxi Bermuda). Currently, my annual gas consumption is around 4500KWh. Even with the latest increase in gas prices, I'd probably save less than £150 per year. It would take a long time to see any return on investment.. The ~£4K it would cost for a new boiler is better spent on draught proofing and insulating. Cut the heating requirement means making better use of existing heat sources (gas CH, wood stove) and means I can get away with a smaller lower power system (e.g. heat pump) when the time comes.
In the meantime, savings can be had by simply turning the gas off when heating is not required - No point in running a pilot light during the summer months.

Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

I wish it were that simple for me, partially disabled with boiler in unreachable place and behind washing machine, plus my boiler doesnt restart easily.  So instead most of my gas usage is my pilot light, and indeed most of my gas bill is the SC+pilot combined.
