I've "been there, done that" several times before I got the hang of it, that function in the forum software certainly leads people into a cycle of despair, glad you have now got to grips with it.

If in doubt, click the </> button, put your cursor right at the end, press Enter, type some characters/your comment. Then click </> again and you'll find your comment below the quote box.  

Note: if you'd originally just typed some random characters - DO NOT delete them all to then type your real reply. If you do this then you'll end up back inside the quote box (and so have to use </> again). Delete all bar the first character, type your actual reply, then delete the first character.
