Last minute Turkey (playing chicken)

Hello - I may being a tad insane here, what I have in mind is hanging on until Christmas eve (Monday) to buy the Turkey. I have £50 in M&S tokens having bought the Daily Mail for a few weeks; so my plan is to go there first.
I remember from last Christmas Eve's people shoving anything into their trolleys at Tesco's with about an hour to go. The turkeys left last year were huge, but well if thats the case the cats will have more to eat. What do you think?? Aldi last year were selling off loads of fresh veg etc really cheaply.
Anyone else up for Christmas roullete??

I have a mate who lives alone and does that every year - she swears by it, and does it even if she's got visitors She says it's always a pleasant surprise to not know exactly what Xmas lunch will consist of.
One year she ended up with duck, bacon, sprouts and potato waffles!0 -
Just be aware that Tesco have NO turkeys left, fresh or frozen, to buy online so not sure how this reflects instore but is certainly worrying. Have we got a turkey shortage this year due to all the recent scares?“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0

Tesco had a notice on their online site saying that Turkeys had to be ordered for online shopping no later than 14th December, think that might be why they show out of stock online.0

Just keep an open mind about christmas dinner LOL!
No but seriously....I've just discovered my best quicky celebration meal yet, and I tried it out on OH's sister again yesterday....Look out for TURKEY BREASTS! I've bought these reduced loads of times...and you can freeze them....
After defrosting wrap them in bacon, place in a baking tray and sprinkle over a bit of thyme, and tuck in a couple of bay leaves, and some small quartered onions, drizzled them with olive oil, and cover with foil and bake for about 45 mins to an hour taking the foil off towards the end to brown the bacon a bit. You get loads of juice in the tin which you can pour off to make gravy with, I added a splash of red wine and a chicken stock cube to mine, then just thickened it with cornflour....I call it "Christmas dinner a la canteen"It's a darn site less bother than a whole turkey! Well tactfully ignore my OH's megadeaths comment, that it took five turkeys to make yesterday's dinner though.....
Serve it with all the trimmings, Mini Roast potatoes (cooked from raw....no need to parboil) and a tray of mixed roast veg..Onions, Carrots, parsnips...and a green veg. I made some HM stuffing too (sausagemeat and apple based) and handed round the cranberry sauce.
Everyone seemed to like it.
Regards

A friend of mine does this every year.
Xmas eve he is in mr Ts and has never failed to get one yet, plus he bags loads of other goodies that have been reduced, i am considering being in the supermarkets about half hour before they close on xmas eve to see what i can get...but then again im just to organised to risk waiting for main christmas items like turkey. I hoping to get lots of bakery items that are normally reduced at the end of day eg cookies, buns, cakes ect.Proud to be DEBT FREE AT LAST0 -
I don't want to sound like bah humbug here and all that but do you all know that the vast majority of turkeys in supermarkets (slightly different % in each one) are factory farmed. The conditions they are reared in are horrendous, I've seen them.
Eating a factory farmed turkey (or any animal for that matter) is hardly in the spirit of Christmas. Please, if you are going to eat meat be as conscientious as possible about where its grown, local free-range organic is by far the best for the animal.
Christmas should be a nice time for all irrespective of your species.
ps 10 million Turkeys are killed for Christmas - thats an environmental disaster when you consider the resources involved and transportation needed.0 -
Always mean to hit the shops late on Christmas Eve, never do as I am either too snowed under with other things I have to do to have time to go, or I don't manage to reach afternoon without a tipple or two, which means that I can't drive...nearest supermarket 6 miles so not going to walk! I think that its a wonderful idea, saving for everybody...customer and landfill!

Didge, I will agree with you in a way, my meat all comes from local farm shops, this is my choice and thankfully I have the money at the moment to pay the extra and a farm local enough for me to travel to (many don't!) but....IF people didn't go in last minute and buy what is left, it'd go in the bin, which is even more wasteful of the costs already to the enviroment. Before anyone says surely they will allow the staff to take it home, no they don't, they'd rather bin it in most supermarkets. I know from someone who runs a deli counter in a local supermarket that last Christmas Eve they threw away over £800 worth of stock.
I usually don't have time to shop Christmas eve apart from collecting my meat order. I did go to Somerfield last year as I had an accident with kitchen foil and needed more, got to say 2 hours before store closing there was very little reduced, they'd knocked small amounts off earlier in the day & the day before so was no real bargains to be had by anyone. One day I might be more organised...........
GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb0 -
I always go to Tesco christmas eve and new years eve and buy up all the bargains, our nearest Tesco was 15 miles away.
A new one has just opened a few minutes away and I go in every Tuesday and wednesday evening and buy up the reduced stuff, tonight I bought a whole salmon reduced from £16.00 down to £1.00.They also had bags of apples, pears, oranges, sprouts and bags of cranberries all reduced to 10p a bag. They seem to reduce a lot of things so I am looking forward to christmas and new year. The stores really quiet in the evenings the people that live round here dont seem to buy reduced food.
Just hope I can find a Turkey on christmas eve.0
