..seems reasonable to me that all shops and all other services can put their prices up to accomodate inflation, but landords are going to be banned from doing this....do they not have any costs, and why only landlords..presumably because they are an easy taget???
It is to stop people being unable to afford their home, the place where they live, you can buy less or walk out of a shop if you don`t like the prices. But we have been hearing for ages that rents are supposedly "soaring" in all areas of the country, so why would landlords be struggling if they are told to just keep charging high rents, is it because many just never had a viable business in the first place, or were rents never "soaring" in the first place?
  • Has Truss followed the Scottish example yet? That would be an excellent way to appear vigilant in the face of rising costs, and a sure fire vote winner for the Tories from the people that may be drifting back to Labour?

She said: “I can announce that we will shortly introduce emergency legislation to parliament. The purpose of the emergency law will be two-fold.

    So  not in force yet

“Firstly, it will aim to give people security about the roof over their heads this winter through a moratorium on evictions

“Secondly, the legislation will include measures to deliver a rent freeze.”

Sturgeon added: “The Scottish government does not have the power to stop your energy bills soaring, but we can and will take action to ensure that your rent does not rise.

“By definition, these are temporary measures, but they will provide much needed security for many during what will be a difficult winter.”

It is expected that the measures will be in place until at least 31 March 2023, while the rent freeze will apply from today.

Only rent freeze to apply from yesterday

6 years ago would have been a good time to sell it maybe?
The housing market here is very different to down south.  8 yeas ago when we tried to sell it, nothing was selling, the market here had not yet recovered from the 2009 crash.  It was after trying for 2 years to sell it, we reluctantly accepted an offer to let it, on the understanding the tenant wanted to buy it but needed to rent it for a couple of years before he could achieve that.

The last 2 years would have been a good time to sell it, but of course it was still tenanted, and we have been too nice and believed the T when he said he still intends to buy it and gave him longer to do so.  Our patience has run out because other factors are dictating that we really really need it sold now.

I now feel we were stupid to let it to him and stupid to believe his eventual intention was to buy it.

I think the solution isn’t just “Landlords bad. Punish landlords”.

    Its reform.

If you lent your car to someone, and they didn’t give it back at the end, you’d call the police and report it stolen. How is bricks and mortar any different?
The difference, and it is a big difference, is that if someone loses the use of a car and becomes car-less, no-one has to replace it.

If a tenant is evicted from their home and becomes homeless, the council often has to rehouse them. Difficult and expensive, especially if they are vulnerable or have children.

All good and well freezing rents, is she also gonna force banks to stop increasing mortgage rates or do landlords have to support all the vulnerable whilst the rest is business as usual?

I think the landllords are an easy target for Government failings.
Is it the role of the private landlord or the Government to ensure people have roofs over their head? It's easy to blame private landlords than admit the 'Government' has failed over 40 years to address this problem. This is failure in building houses when in power or maybe arguing the negatives of the right to buy and that it should be scrapped when in opposition?
(I'm not decrying right to buy or those who have benefitted quire rightly but it wasn't a well though out long term plan but a quick fix vote winner).

As explained above, that's a job for Liz rather than Nicola.
  • Well done Ms Sturgeon - a leader who's actually doing something for the vulnerable - rather than wasting the past 6-plus weeks on a daft leadership election gaining 81k votes from aged gold club members.

But artfull, they can't let a little thing like a leadership election or cost of living crisis get in the way of their trips to that hideous t'uther side of the channel 😉
