Switching energy companies

I am a student who started a new tenancy on 1st July 2022. The previous tenants were with Huddle energy and we have since tried to switch energy companies to get a better deal. Due to us not informing Huddle of the switch they rejected it and when we tried again Ovo energy and octopus stated they were no longer allowing anymore switches. We have just got a quote from Huddle for £534 per month for gas and electricity which seems extortionate. On all the energy company websites we have looked at they all suggest staying with your current supplier. Has anyone got any advice on getting cheaper energy tariffs and switching companies?

Almost impossible.
Keep a close track on your consumption - read that meter weekly and make sure everyone pays their fair share into a kitty.

Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
To be clear, you are in a deemed contract with the existing supplier, and you cannot switch until you have registered with them. Have you?No free lunch, and no free laptop

We registered with them and told Huddle we wanted to switch but by that point the other energy companies then wouldn't allow a switch.macman said:To be clear, you are in a deemed contract with the existing supplier, and you cannot switch until you have registered with them. Have you?0 -
Ok so definitely better to be on the variable rate over the fixed?armistice said:macman said:To be clear, you are in a deemed contract with the existing supplier, and you cannot switch until you have registered with them. Have you?
Echoing this, but just to add don't agree to a fixed tariff. You are entitled to join the standard variable rate.0 -
Are you only with Huddle for gas/electricity or is it one of those package for all utilities, including water, broadband etc?
They are a company that specialise in student accounts and bill sharing and I believe you'll pay quite a bit extra for their services.

Nothing definite about any choice right now. Take your best guess.katie13127 said:

We are only with Huddle for gas/ electricity. Our bills for water and broadband are separate. Yes we have to pay extra for them to split our bills for us which is something we do not requireAlnat1 said:Are you only with Huddle for gas/electricity or is it one of those package for all utilities, including water, broadband etc?

Octopus might take you on then if you wanted, if your case for switching is that it definitely would be better for you.katie13127 said:

I'd give it a few days for the new PM to make announcements, then give Octopus a ring.
Their staff seem more likely to react positively to switching requests if you can explain that moving to them will save you money.Barnsley, South Yorkshire
