@macman I believe gas hobs are 40% efficient with induction hobs 84% efficient so that does not equate to the 350% difference you have quoted. So for a gas hob to put 1kwh into your baked bean pan it's  37p (based on 14.8p kWh) and for an induction hob 61.67p (based on 51.8p kWh)

That's a 66.68% increase using induction over gas not 350%

This might help you with your percentage increases

I didn't say it was more efficient. I said it was cheaper. Electricity on the October cap will be 52p per kWh, gas 15p per kWh. That's a differential of 347%.
I'm not convinced by the efficiency percentages you quote, but, even if they were correct, and that makes induction twice as efficient, it still means that electricity is 250% more expensive to run. Adjusted, roughly 60p per kWh to 24p per kWh.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Lower power hob means longer to heat whatever is on it - overall energy use about the same.

kW isn't the important thing, what matters is the kWh consumed for the complete task.

I know, induction is most efficient, so that's why I may be overthinking this one?
If running cost is a factor for you, why are you not looking at a gas hob and oven? KWh for kWh, electric ones will cost you about 350% more to run. Do you have mains gas available?
There's some slight loss in efficiency, but not nearly enough to offset the vastly lower energy cost with gas.

I do have gas but it's far away from the kitchen. I used to like cooking with gas but prefer the ease of cleaning on a glass hob and it gives me extra space, induction is also safer. I don't want the disruption, stress and cost of getting gas into the kitchen and no doubt having to complain that they ruined my floor boards etc....
