Switching off overnight

Coffeekup said:I turn everything off at the wall apart from FF, whenever no one is home and when asleep. A cd player, amp, TV, sky box, pc, monitor, dvd player, toaster and a washing machine gets turned off. I have been doing this since September last year, it's saved me 30 kWh's a month over previous 3 year's usage.
The microwave has been off since last September and hasn't been back on as I don't use it, which was one of the culprit's above that reduced my usage.
My first post said I was considering turning stuff off overnight. Then I thought it would be better always turning them off as soon as I had finished using them.
I have also just carried out a survey and my TVs, washing machine, tumble dryer and amp register 0.0 W on my plug energy monitor when plugged in.
Other items register less than 0.5 W, which is 1.5 kWh each per year based on 8 hours overnight.
The most surprising one was my CD player, which registered 4W when plugged in giving an annual consumption of 35 kWh for a 24 hour day when not being used.

I don't have a meter so can't measure watt usage of my household items, but I'm pretty sure my amp uses power especially after use. I turn the power button off and there is still light in the led "light on" indicator, even the next day it was still dimly lit.
I suppose it comes down to who makes the appliances/equipment. The price of the unit to start off with (i.e. FF a cheaper one will use less electricity than a more expensive one (in theory)). I'm guessing it also depends if it's "smart" like my washing machine before I used to turn it off at the wall it used to have a light on and ping things to my phone.1 -
@Coffeekup,
I agree with everything you say and with my monitor I have found unusual characteristics. For example when I switch off my television it runs at 12W for 30 minutes and then falls to 0.00W. Standby followed by deep sleep?
Regarding hi-fi, audiophiles advocate keeping hi-fi components switched on to retain their heat and thus improve the quality of the music reproduction.
Then again they do tend to OCD behaviour. Sorry if I have offended anyone but I think I would prefer to save a bit of money.0 -

I used to do this, less temperature cycling as well. But I've cut down my non-washing day usage from 6 kWh to just under 4 kWh which I'm pleased with. Amp/streamer only comes on when I use it (still sounds good), washing machine (25w when plugged in) Dryer only when when used etc1
