It is for me and the Mrs even understand heat pump now when I mention it especially as the terminology is used for highly efficient tumble dryers as well.
    Wouldn't you say?

Splitting hairs a bit but I would always consider ‘heat pump’ to always refer to either ground to water, or air to water heat transfer systems

I suppose you could call modern air conditioners air to air Heat Pumps in winter, and air to air Cold Pumps in summer 🤔
For what it's worth it wasn't at all obvious to me what you meant in your first post and I certainly wondered if what you were doing was wise. Given how unusual what you were talking about still is I do think it's helpful to be careful to explain what you mean.

This winter I have my bedridden mum staying in one room so I'm thinking of the best way to heat her room. There is a log burner but I'm told it's too near the bed to be safe.
Not wise to have someone sleeping in a room with a log burner. I wouldn't trust any CO monitor.

I'll be putting it on soon as it gets too cold. No difference to last year. I but I'm only paying 5p a unit for gas.

Tado smart heating is per room though so I only need to heat the rooms in in

Usually have rooms I'm in set to 20c

This is is the fist sentence of my originally post ..

I’ll be trying not to use the combi boiler at all for CH and just heat the 2 rooms that I have reverse cycle air conditioners in using electricity.”

I really couldn’t have written it any simply or more clearly, without going into the ins and outs of the refrigeration cycle

I actually never mentioned the term Heat Pump myself 😀
  • We'll likely have it on by October. It will be set to 16 over night and 18 during the day. We are oil fired (combi boiler) not mains gas/electric and have just spent £1000 filling up the tank (@0.89p litre) before prices rise even further again. Each radiator has its own TRV so we can adjust as my son hates his room being warm and we like a cooler bedroom too and often have the window open at night - this doesn't effect the thermostat overnight as the doors to downstairs are kept shut to stop the cats bringing us special presents to eat... We also have an open fire which will start to be used this month if chillier.

Our home is very well insulated as part of an energy scheme in the village a few years back. It is a little sad as it lost its visual charm a bit (1880s built so had a lovely victorian frontage before) but the energy savings are huge from the cladding and insulation so I'll just stick to bringing back the internal charm for the money saving on energy! The only weak spots I can identify are the front door, which is all glass, so will have a door curtain being put up in front of it next week, and us having to keep the door to the kitchen open for the cats to get to the living/dining room. For that we may just put a cat flap through the internal door so we can keep it closed.
  • as soon as it get cold
  • As Grant says - when it gets cold :-)  I usually try to wait until the start of November, but my old bones notice the temperature more these days, so am starting earlier.  But it's no good having money in the bank if you are feeding the worms, so you need to keep warm! :-)
