Me and my wife bought train tickets three weeks ago to travel on the15 of this month and wondered what are our rights if our train service is cancelled due to the ongoing rail dispute. And what happens if there are no trains available for our return journey.if we managed the outgoing trip.

The East Midlands Railway website gives details on your rights here:

I also forgot to mention we are catching a Thameslink service from our local station to St Pancras and
from there we get the East Midlands train to Leicester.0 -
From which company did you purchase the tickets? It is the retailer who deals with refunds in the event that the train service does not run.

We got our tickets from Rail Line as we normally due and I still have the receipt with the reference number on it.I suppose I have to go to their website to get refund. But what happens when there are no trains to return home on which is possible0

The fact that you are travelling by one service to St Pancras and then onwards to Leicester is further justification for a full refund as it is highly unlikely that all services will run on time for your connections.0 -
Pointless using thetrainline.com and having to pay a booking fee of up to £1.50. Just book through any of the operating companies. No free lunch, and no free laptop1

But you won't be able to get any reimbursement for any costs you incur over and above your train ticket if you manage to travel so far and then get stranded (e.g if you end up having to stop in a hotel or get a taxi becasue of announced strike action)0
