I guess the totting up ban is treated a bit differently because it's a series of minor offenses over a period of years and it's relatively easy to get 3 points.
That said, anyone who'd be subjecting others to extreme hardship if they lose their driving license should be making an effort to drive better especially if they are already on 6 or 9 points. I know after I got 3 points I drove like a nun for a while.

And you are obsessed with the hyperbole. If they truly have little regard for the law, they will be caught again and will not be allowed to use the same reasons again if they get any points at all. If you look beyond the hyperbole, there is 10% of an already small proportion of drivers who have amassed 12 points that have been given the ability to keep driving. When caught again, which if they have a blatant disregard for the law, they will be, then they won't be able to use the same reason again, regardless.The_Unready said:It's really not worth getting into an argument with you about this stuff. You seem to be obsessed with focussing on anything apart from the main point, which is that thousands of motorists escape driving bans each year when reaching 12 penalty points because they successfully claim extreme/excessive hardship. That is a fact.
As such, they are free to drive on the roads, potentially as a menace to other road users given the fact that they obviously have little regard for the law.
That's all I'm going to say on this one now, but please feel free to continue to argue with yourself.
Media has got so obsessed with getting clicks that hyperbole is used more and more to get engagement, which sells the ad space. Just look at any article from Reach - this covers most newspapers like Mirror, Wales Online and just about every local newspaper - lots of clickbait headlines and hyperbole to get people to read the ads that scroll around the story.1 -
The main point was to address the OP's query, not to embark on a discussion of the system.The_Unready said:It's really not worth getting into an argument with you about this stuff.
