You are also not taking EV tariffs into account.

Octopus go is 7.5p for night charging.
Increasing numbers of people we're seeing on here don't see to have managed to get on those tariffs though - and this is going to make saving the planet way too expensive for a lot of folk, going forwards. Bad enough come October, but looking at the projections  for a few cap-revisions' time I can genuinely see people needing to park these vehicles up because they simply can't afford to use them.

It's going to be incredibly interesting to see whether sales of EVs tank over the next few months.
I have not seen that many who were not accepted for Octopus go, main issue was no smart meter which is a must.

Also they might have started to ask for proof that people have an EV, there were many trying to get onto the tariff because it was cheaper than E7 without an EV.

Since many people buying electric cars will be buying them new, you also have to factor in the considerable savings in VED, and BIK savings if they are running them as company cars.
It's not just about the fuelling/charging comparison.

If you have an EV, a home charger and a smart meter then the current 'Go' tariffs are significantly cheaper than the October cap for day use and dramatically cheaper over night so I fail to see why people wouldn't be on an EV tariff, there are no road blocks from the Octopus end...

Unless you don't have a compatible smart meter and Octopus refuse to upgrade it to one that is compatible as is my situation
The only potentially incompatible smart meter would be an unadopted SMETS1, which was also not a Secure brand meter...
    Which meter do you have?

Think it's an elster brand, it can only seem to manage 1 reading a month to e.on next at the minute. I called Octopus a few weeks back and was just told it wouldn't work just now and they wouldn't replace a working smart meter for another one.  It may work in the future but not sure when

That part at least is down to E.ON/your data settings.
The meter only responds to requests, so if E.ON only request the index once a month then that is all you will get.
Somewhere in your online account settings there will be a place to give E.ON permission to access the half-hour data, without your permission E.ON cannot request that data.

Do you know what the basis for the 'no' was? ... if it was just that you are not currently seeing half-hour data then that is a red herring, did it go beyond the front-line CS staff or was it just the one phone conversation?

I have gone into my settings to say to take half hourly data but that made no difference, still just once a month

When phoning i was put through to the smart meter team who said that currently my meter was not supported as it is not a secure brand SMETS1 but that it may be supported at some point in the future (I did not mention the lack of half hourly reading to them). I asked if they would change it to a SMETS 2 meter if i switch to them and they just said no they would not replace what is a working smart meter even though it isn't smart for them.

Then they will have checked to see if the meter had been adopted and apparently it wasn't at that time.
There is some hope for you though, check this Ofcom open letter...
    In particular, this part...
"Suppliers are also required by their licence to take all reasonable steps to ensure all unenrolled SMETS1 meters are replaced with a SMETS2 meter by the end of the year, 31 December 2022.
    SMETS1"
Chase E.ON for an update on the enrolment or replacement of your meter as either of those would allow you to move to Octopus and E.ON have an obligation to have done one or the other by the end of this year...

Octopus replaced my 2 year old SMETS2 gas and electricity meters in June with SMETS2 meters because they couldn't get my gas readings, I'd switched to them in April. The electric meter was working fine before they changed it.

Replacing faulty meters should never be a problem and sometimes it is easier to just replace both at the same time.
The pain point for most suppliers is dealing with the remaining unadopted SMETS1 meters, so I can understand why a supplier would be reticent to accept a switch in from someone with an unadopted meter as it is effectively transferring a cost and a problem that the current supplier should have already dealt with given there is only 4 months left before the deadline.

  • The concern would be if the likes of Octopus remove their EV tariffs or on the said tariffs the peak rate is well above the SVT / fixed deals, that wil make it a bit more difficult as your getting a cheap EV charging rate but paying a premium at peak times.

For now though leasing / buying an EV using Octopus Go tariffs is still far cheaper than running an equivalent ICE vehicle.

Until things settle leasing an EV seems to be the better option as there is quite a hefty premium on their purchase price and at least until 2030 and ICE sales are banned we are going to have this roller-coaster of Elec V Fuel as the better option in terms of overall costs.
