I'm just about to install open wardrobes. PAX ones with all the fancy innards to be precise. We are going open, but that's because it's in a separate dressing area. We could've put doors on but it complicated things (like lighting, low ceilings...) so we decided open. Bit cheaper too. Only thing to be aware of is clothes can get dustier and fade. We are going to put UV filtering on the window.0

Open wardrobes in a bedroom sounds terrible. I don’t want to be looking at my mess of clothes when trying to sleep! Nor do I want the dust settling on the shoulders of stuff I wear once a year.I’d also recommend you give IKEA another shot. The Pax system is excellent. We have them with drawers, hanging rails, shelves etc. all hidden inside. Clean and simple on the outside, nice and organised inside.2

I've made up my mind after having a look at the Pax at Ikea and would like to ask if anyone has had items delivered by Ikea and how it was. Do they deliver upstairs?
I need a home delivery as I want 3 x 100 wardrobes and also a couple of chests of drawers so too much to get in a small van. Looking at the website whilst ordering it says 'To one room in your home' or something like that. Obviously being wardrobes and having a disabled husband I would like the items taken upstairs on delivery.
Today I was in Ikea and asked if they would actually deliver upstairs and was told 'Probably, but it may cost a bit more for delivery' as the basic price is for what they call a kerb drop.
I said that when ordering online it just says £40 for delivery and does not specify if that means they will take the stuff upstairs, nor does it give different prices for delivery depending on your situation. It's just the standard one price.
I was then told that when you get to the payment screen the different rates of charges for delivery will be shown but again that is not right so despite going into the store for the info I am no wiser. Basically, everything I was told in Ikea is contradicted by everything on the website.0 -
Ikea used to deliver to room of choice, but that was dropped during Covid restrictions. Maybe if you print out or show the delivery people the relevant section on the website they will honour it, especially given your circumstances. If they grumble, offer them a tenner to sweeten the deal! I had mine delivered into my garage (during Covid) and I unpacked them there and carried the components upstairs myself - they are long and awkward rather then heavy.

https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/customer-service/services/delivery/ states clearly delivered to the room of your choice - last year when we bought a bed & other furniture the delivery chaps took it upstairs without any problems.

I'm currently putting together a PAX wardrobe as a dressing room, doing open concept. If you do go for them let me know any advice you need. I have discovered a few things I wish I knew before ordering that make them look better. Overall I'm very happy.
I would recommend going into store on a quiet day and having them help you design them. I just did this with my Mum (in the Lakeside store, on an incredibly busy Saturday) and they were extremely helpful.
Also, instead of getting separate chests of drawers why not get PAX carcasses with the drawers inside to keep it all neat?0 -
I've had Ikea deliver upstairs but that was pre-Covid. As said though, as it's Ikea flat-pack the boxes are easy enough to move upstairs (with two of you), or you can even open the boxes and carry the parts upstairs.
Glad you're going for Pax - we've been really pleased with ours. The flexibility to design the interiors is absolutely superb for the price. As much choice as when we once (years ago) had a fitted bedroom done for an absolute fraction of the price. Our Pax wardrobes are now three years old and look like new.0 -
Thank you all for the replies. I feel better now as I know I can probably manage (even perhaps call a neighbour in to help if I get stuck).
Just to answer Greensalad re having drawers inside instead of a chest of drawers. The wall space on one wall is only big enough to have 1 x 1000 robe because there are windows on 2 walls in the bedroom and a radiator on one of the others.
I want a lot of hanging space so Im having 2 x 1000 on the other wall but I will have a long free space of wall where I cant fit a robe because of the window but I can get a set of drawers along it which will runn under the window.
I've gone for the Grimo doors in grey and even though they dont do drawers in Grimo there are a set of 6 drawers which are exactly the same colour and will match well enough so my plan is to put the same handles on the robes to tie them together.
That way I get to utilise the space and get 6 drawers without taking the hanging space from the 3 robes. I plan to have 2 with just hanging rails and on with hanging rail and shelves.
I went in store and had a look and then designed online myself then went back to the store and checked everything again. Although I have to say much as I like the look if them there are a lot of inserts, baskets, pull out rails, jewellery trays etc that I just dont think I would use so I'm keeping it quite basic then adding on if I later want to.
Just out of interest greensalad, what do you wish you had known before ordering?0
