Our bedroom is a mess! We have our bed and on both sides of the bed there are a mixture of drawers and wardrobes in no less than 3 styles.

Partly because we merged 2 homes and then I was also offered a lovely wardrobe that I couldn't turn down but it's just a jumbled mess. I want to get rid of it all and just have one full wall with a mix of hanging space and drawers.

I've been looking at some of the ones that are just a mix of hanging rails with a selection of boxes and shelves and they tend to look really good on the photos but of course they always show a selection of hanging clothing which are always a delicate pink and grey and the handbags/shoes are always coordinated to match. Now I imagine that if mine and hubbys clothes were displayed on the same rails it would have more of a charity shop look. My clothes are every colour of the rainbow and his are more the t-shirt/sweatshirt type of thing rather than nicely ironed office shirts.

So I've also looked at just having a run of new wardrobes/drawers but all matching but they dont seem as flexible in terms of storage options.

So just wondering what others would choose. Do you like the new open wardrobe options or do they just look untidy? I imagine they are great for the 'walk in wardrobe' type of space but do they work in the actual bedroom?

I like minimalistic and clear cut simplicity so, for me, a room with everything on display would irritate me no end !
Also, wouldn't they fade with the light levels, get dusty ?? I guess only in a sunlit room.
No, definitely not for me  :D

I've had open rails in a spare room for the last couple of years.  The clothes end up dusty and with spiders in them and a number of things have faded.  I hate the messiness and am looking to change it to something nicer.  The rails were cheap ones bought to accommodate all our carp following a house merge move and we're still trying to recover.

The cheap rails easily collapse (which scared the behoosus out of our cat who was sleeping underneath at the time) so I'm replacing them with sturdier Ikea ones.  Still open but they can be enclosed so I'm just doing it step by step.

Closed. I'd look for a local independent joiner to fit something bespoke

I agree with you on this. We have open style but in a dressing room with nothing else in it really apart from the wardrobes. We really like them but wouldn't have them in a bedroom as they do look quite cluttered when full with clothes.

We got ours from fittingly who do some good options for bespoke (both closed and open style), and were pretty decent.

I had an open hanging rail as a child - worked fine when I had one party dress, school uniform and about four other outfits, with everything except the party dress getting worn regularly.  I have far too much stuff, some not worn frequently, to want that now.

Ikea have the KOMPLEMENT range that fit into their PAX wardrobes.  The combinations are limitless. Solid drawers, glass drawers, solid shelves, glass shelves, hangers, shoe racks, baskets, dividers for accessories, jewellery holders, the works.

We have Pax wardrobes, all fitted, but in a dressing room, so we shut the door on that.   In a bedroom I would have doors.

Do a proper job and have a room for clothes.

No need for any windows to cause fading.

Only have what's needed for a few days stored in your sleeping area.

Doors n eed space sliders can help but limit access to one side at a time.
  • Closed it is then. Thank you all for the replies.

I went to Ikea today for inspiration but its so flaming confusing working out what you need for what system.  Im obviously of the age where I want to see the finished product with the price on rater then having to configure it out myself.

I saw some dark blue wardrobes I liked but they don't do sets of drawers in the same range, then I found some grey sets of drawers I liked but they don't do wardrobes in that range.
Came home totally confused and didn't even get any meatballs!

The drawers go in the wardrobes.  If you want the best use of space, you should use the full height of a wall.

You can use the Ikea configurator yourself or someone will help you in store - weekdays would involve less waiting than weekends!
