You do realise that the current UK energy policy was created by Labour? The Con/Lib coalition didn't change it. Nor the Con governments that followed. Warnings were given by the regulator back in 2008 prior to Labour enacting the policy but they were ignored.vision2009 said:Because they do not have our vile Tory government ripping us all off.
So, the current homegrown issues should get cross-party blame.
Plus, the cost of gas is a global issue that is particularly hitting Europe harder. As much as you may well wish it, the Conservative Government have no control in setting global gas prices.

I was thinking Spain might make rather more use of solar energy than the UK too?[Deleted User] said:
It's traditionally a little bit lower - something like 25-30% - mainly because there's some big hydro in Spain that we don't have.macman said:
Neither can I now, but I think it was about 42%. Fairly similar to the UK.Ultrasonic said:
Looks like I can't see the graph without signing up for Statistica. What was the gas-based percentage?macman said:https://www.statista.com/statistics/1007877/share-of-electricity-generation-in-spain/
Is 'combined cycle' gas fired? A lot of Spanish gas is piped in from Algeria.
Interestingly, Spain used to use oil where the UK used coal. Probably due to proximity to North Africa.0 -
I have a bag of wheat for sale that everybody wants because there is a global shortage of wheat. Do I price it at what people can afford or what people will pay? Sadly, it is the latter as that is how global markets work. The problem that we have in this Country - and many others - is that Governments are focussed on the short-term. They want to realise the benefits of their investment before the next Election. Generally, MPs care more about retaining their seats than they do about the people that they represent. As a result, the Government is now making strategic decisions on energy that it should have made years ago, and we are now beginning to the see the effect of delayed policy decisions such as the closure of Rough gas storage; the lack of investment in nuclear, and the closure of UK gas fields.
Would a change of Government and/or Nationalisation of all suppliers lead to lower energy prices - personally, I doubt it. The Global market is what it is.2 -
Not much more - yet. We are ahead on the small solar PV (rooftops and suchlike), and they focused more on large CSP (concentrated solar power) at utility scale.Ultrasonic said:

EU, in it altogether!DeeQS said:
Spain gets it's gas from Algeria and has little/no pipelines from Spain into France and on. Germany wants them to divert gas into the continent. My Spanish friends tell me Spain is feeling quite smug after years of Germany telling Spain/Greece/Italy about poor fiscal management and now asking them for help.

My best recent figures for the comparison:
Spain annual electricity 272TWh - Gas 69, Nuclear 56.5, Hydro 30, Renewables 96.
UK annual electricity 310TWh - Gas 124, Nuclear 46, Hydro 5, Renewables 117.1 -
I hope the Spanish government has deep pockets because Belgium's energy minister has warned that EU countries will face five to 10 terrible winters if nothing is done to reduce natural gas prices.

Part of the EU single energy market perhaps. Same as reason NI electricity is cheaper than mainland?northernstar007 said:how come the spannish elecky is cheaper than ours on a fix 5yr deal
The NI electricity is something that should be raised, why should prices be so much lower in one part of the country?Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0
