Looks like I can't see the graph without signing up for Statistica. What was the gas-based percentage?macman said:https://www.statista.com/statistics/1007877/share-of-electricity-generation-in-spain/
Is 'combined cycle' gas fired? A lot of Spanish gas is piped in from Algeria.0 -
Well that would explain cheaper prices...northernstar007 said:so they make it out of fresh air

Because the Spanish government is subsidising the cost.northernstar007 said:how come the spannish elecky is cheaper than ours on a fix 5yr deal
By doing so they're building up a debt that will need to be paid off at some point. Same as the French government.
No such thing as a free lunch.1 -
Heart did a little skip when I read the title.... spanish is cheaper! I used to eat so much spanish I thought I'd never get my teeth white again. Also, what happened to tablet? Not seen either of them for ages...You have the same number of hours in the day as Einstein had. Use them.1

Yep subsidising at huge cost. Electricity in Spain (and Portugal) that is produced from Gas is capped at €55 per mwh. Compared to the rest of the continent that's paying sometimes €900mwh.
Domestic prices are still 0.15c kwh. With exchange rate this is now roughly 13p kwh. 4x cheaper than the October cap.
Spanish government implemented this in June thinking it would be a short term solution but now they're worried about running out of money to fund it. How long it will last I've no idea.
Spain gets it's gas from Algeria and has little/no pipelines from Spain into France and on. Germany wants them to divert gas into the continent. My Spanish friends tell me Spain is feeling quite smug after years of Germany telling Spain/Greece/Italy about poor fiscal management and now asking them for help.1 -
may be time to cancel the aid we give to other countries, we are skint and still giving cash away and cancel that stupid hs21

What do you think the government have done which is ripping you off by increasing energy prices?1
-
Absolutely - "what did previous governments fail to do that led us into this market condition" is a much better question.maisie_cat said:
While I agree that successive Governments have not future proofed I'm not sure how the international price of energy being manipulated by a few mostly foreign owned multinationals is akin to them "ripping us off"vision2009 said:Because they do not have our vile Tory government ripping us all off.
And the answer to that has been on other threads here - energy efficiency, insulation, generation without imported fuel....2 -
Neither can I now, but I think it was about 42%. Fairly similar to the UK.Ultrasonic said:

It's traditionally a little bit lower - something like 25-30% - mainly because there's some big hydro in Spain that we don't have.macman said:

Interestingly, Spain used to use oil where the UK used coal. Probably due to proximity to North Africa.2
