    I’m a bit confused here.

Are these not measuring 2 different things.

the ivie is measuring total energy consumption, gas as well as electricity, ie it brings central heating into the equation, and I’ll be able to see if gas or electricity usage is spiking, and find out why (eg someone has put the immersion heater on 🗡🗡🗡🗡)

the £11 thing (eg, https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00G955V0E/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A2DHZ8PEFUW8LD&psc=1) will measure usage by one particular appliance so I can find things I need to turn off (more often) and ones I can ignore

Is that what each of them does?
That is correct. One will show you the current electricity use for all device in you home, while the other one will show you the usage of a specific device.

The second one will show the usage for the single device for a day or week. So you can see what for example your fridge freezer uses per day. This helps identify inefficient devices, or which devices should be switch off at the socket because the standby usage is to high.

The plug in energy monitor for £11 will probably tell you more detailed info about an appliance which sounds like what you are wanting.

An IHD will only tell you "something" is using a lot of power right now.

Pedant warning. IHDs do not show realtime usage. Electricity instant power (kW)/usage (kWh) is polled once every 10 seconds, and gas usage (kWh) is retrieved once every 30 minutes.

For most people, the BRIGHT app provides enough information to make useful decisions on usage and cost. The App can be updated throughout the day with a screen swipe.

Any device IHD or CAD that is connected to the smart meter Home Area Network has to be configured by either a supplier or a DCC registered Other User such as Hildebrand (BRIGHT IHD/CAD) or Chameleon (iVie IHD).
