  • Dear everyone who has tried to help. A big thank you. I do not have an electric shower. I said gas whizzing round because it goes up so much each dAy. All your suggestions I have tried. It is not an estimated reading. I photographed the meter reading and sent one in. You have all been helpful with your suggestions and I have hopefully escalated the situation. I am also going to turn my boiler off .
it’s a small flat, all radiators off, hob cooker, and it’s summer.
So hopefully someone will come round. Boiler one year old.
I will post and let you know the outcome .

Have you tried tweeting Octopus?  I just have about getting a smart meter and was responded to almost instantly.  Don't know if you have tried complaint as per this link https://selectra.co.uk/energy/providers/octopus-energy/contact#:~:text=Firstly%2C%20you%20can%20call%20the,the%20company's%20office%20in%20London.

  • No. The figure was much higher than the bill. Hence thinking it is a meter problem. I posted originally to see if anyone else had experienced this problem and to find out how I can alert octopus who have been unresponsive. Now I have escalated .
  • Thank you re tweet. I a not on tweet, never done them . It is another step thank you

Have you recently moved in? i.e. in the last couple of years.
Does the meter serial number match the one on your bill?
Is meter actually in your flat or in a shared communal area?

Reason for asking - we seen other posters to this forum come on here with meter issues in flats, where meters and flat numbers are not aligned correctly - specially with new build or conversions, just a thought.

If you have been in the place a while when did the usage issues start?

  • Yes I moved last year but I had a smart meter put in about 6 months later. That is interesting though. The other thing is two months ago before the big bills I had a new radiator put in as other one was old and not working. It was done by a registered gas person . I wonder if he mucked up the supply.it was a radiator in spare room rarely used, about ten times . Rarely  put it on.

Might be worth doing a simple test, next to every gas meter is a shut off valve, does it actually switch your gas off in your flat?  I would have thought that a gas engineer fitting a radiator might shut off the gas but unlikely to interfere with the incoming supply.

If you are not confident this doing yourself, i.e. any pilot lights need to be reset afterwards get someone in to check.

Have I missed a post somewhere or have we still not been told what these meter readings are?

No, you haven't missed a post. OP still won't give meter readings or copy of bill for reasons only he/she knows.
Shame, because he/she might have been able to be helped more.
