EDF Fixed Rate Tariff

I received an email from EDF energy on the 15th of July regarding my fixed tariff which was ending on the 31.08.22.
I was offered a standard variable tariff or I could fix my tariff again until 31.08.24.
EDF requested that I let them know what tariff I would like to go ahead with by the 31.08.22 and that if they have not heard from me by the 31.08.22 I would automatically be switched to the standard variable tariff.
I have just called them up to say that I would like to go with the fixed offer only to be told that it is no longer available and that I should have responded earlier.
I pointed out that their email said I needed to let them know by the 31.08.22, the call handler said there was nothing she could do about this but admitted the wording of the email implys that the customer has until the 31.08.22. Obviously I am very cross about this as nowhere in that email did it say I needed to decide straight away only that I needed to let them know by 31.08.22.
Has anyone else experienced this with EDF ? I think it is totally unfair and misleading.

You had to let them know by 31.08 whether you wanted to go onto a fixed tariff or go onto the SVT.
They didn't have to keep the July fixed tariff for you. You still have the option to go onto today's fixed tariff.1 -

I wonder if that's because the French government are forcing them to make a massive loss over there.
Still, same sentiment applies. They have the right to withdraw a tariff (close it to new entrants) at any time, and the letter described by the OP is alerting the customer that they will go to SVT at the end of their contract unless they choose another available option (available meaning at the time of choosing, not at some point in the past).0 -
They would typically include such information urging you to select a new fix "now" rather than in the future, for example EON had the following in their emails "don't hang around as tariffs on offer can change at any time."So the tariff has gone now and there's nothing you can do to bring it back.0

Your current tariff, Easy Online Renewal Jul22v2 ends on 31 July 2022.See your tariff options at my.edfenergy.com/blue/N6tnNjLM/If we don't hear from you by 31 July 2022, you'll move to our Safeguard Assist Capped tariff on 1 August 2022.
However if you look on page 2 it also says
‘We launch new tariffs all the time, so prices shown might have changed by the time you get this. Go online for the most up to date information’
Nowhere does it say they will hold this tariff for you to decide at your own convenience.0 -
Thank you, I should have acted earlier !0

You aren't the first that didn't read the whole email.
If you had been active here since April then you would have seen many tariffs were only offered for limited periods and then withdrawn as the predictions became more dire.
My "exclusive" offer that came on12th May offering a new fix to begin on 1st July had this in the email.
"Tariffs can change daily so may no longer be available. All the tariffs you can buy directly from us will always be shown on our website"
I took it a couple of days later and almost immediately it was replaced in my online account with a new version for the same term with increased unit rates.
I swithered about keeping it in the following 14 days cooling off period but am now very happy I didn't cancel it.
Unless the government go for a "Starmer/Reeves" solution I will be very happy with unit rates of 9.692p for gas and 34.85p for electricity until 31st May 2024.
SC remains at the April-October 2022 SVT levels for EDF southern Scotland.
