the answers are not the quick on this site and wondered if the techies might be able to resolve my issues

Basically the pc will not operate correctly...wont even connect to the net or indeed even allow me to turn on windows firewall?

Check that it hasn't been disabled through Group Policies (gpedit.msc).

1.Start the Group Policy Editor and open the Local Computer policy by using the steps provided in the How to Start the Group Policy Editor section of this article.

NOTE: You can start the Group Policy Editor snap-in from the command line. This automatically loads the Local Computer GPO. To do this, follow these steps: a. Click Start, and then click Run.b. In the Open box, type Gpedit.msc, and then click OK.2.Expand User Configuration (if it is not already expanded).

Sometimes it is so messed up that it is safer and best to copy off your data, wipe, partition, format the disk and start again.

Also starting again ensures that there are no hidden 'gifts' left behind.

I would ask if you were a Norton user, but i've already been accused of norton bashing this week :)

Besides the usual I virus checkers etc, i would recommend something like Rollback: http://www.horizon-datasys.com/ or eaz fix http://www.eazsolution.com/ . I feel that these should be used in conjunction with a partition strategy that separates System and vital progs, from data and non vital progs.

  • Thanks all

Am just running the following SFC /SCANNOW to see if any files are missing
Almost immediatly it asked for the xp SP2 disc of which i have not got - only got the original and downloaded the SP's so just clicked 'skip'...where can I get the files it has asked for in case these are the files that are preventing it from working?

    Cheers

It is a fairly standard messsage that ask for sp2

sp2 might be on that cd - if it is a recovery cd. Dell have sp2 on some of their installation disk - it is written on the label.

Basically just tell it is it your cd again and see what happens.
