Car Hire in the UK - the Foreign License debacle

I live in the UAE, and have UAE license.
A UK license, whilst still in my bottom drawer, is technically invalid.
Most years (except the last 2!) I have hired a car in the UK for a couple of weeks.
The biggest mine-field is the ever-changing attitude to foreign licenses and International Driving Licenses.
There used to be at least an 80% acceptance rate for a UAE license.
No longer the case, it seems.
Hire companies change their policies on a whim, often after booking, which, on one occasion left me 450 out of pocket.
Is there a tracker for this sort of thing, so 'shock horror', make the situation open and transparent?
Preparing to make booking over the next week..!

As it's individual companies apparently changing their minds I very much doubt there is, or could be, any form of tracker to show who requires what. What do you mean by your UK licence being technically invalid? Unless you were banned from driving in the UK it's normally valid until age 70.

Whilst car hire companies don't check, it's a massive grey area, should you actually have an accident.
Still technically not legal.0
