But what of those already on a fix.

They'll be excluded from any TOU change in rates, so that won't work.
Well of course they would be, just as they are temporarily 'excluded' from a change in the cap.  Nobody said that this was a scheme for everyone to be paid.

Well that is why I said the devil was in the details 😉

It remains to be seen who will (could) actually benefit from the idea, once fleshed out.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 3.24% of current retirement "pot" (as at end December 2025)

I would guess  that the majority of the country do not use big appliances in the evening. Most will just be sat down watching TV etc.

I can see it a excuse to up daytime costs.
5-8pm will be the key time for heating in the winter, oven/cooking usage and entertainment. Games console, gaming PC's and TVs and TV set top boxes.

Are you sure the majority of the country applies to your statements.
And potentially dishwasher (post dinner) and washer/drier.

If the idea is to help "busy working families" then it's going to fall flat on its face!!

Peak time is peak time for a reason, and may be completely impractical for them to "shift" their consumption to earlier or later.

If it helps people who are ill/disabled/pensioners and don't go out to work then it has covered several of the vulnerable groups who might be struggling and are able to shift peak usage.

Quite, but that's also assuming they don't already do that as part of their normal routine.

Unlikely they can shave "another" x% off their peak usage, IYSWIM.

It's not going to help the greenies who've set themselves up with a heatpoump either as that's when you need to be running it rather than just when you are off to bed

If you look at the current hourly electricity pricing, it's 4pm-8pm that generally has the highest prices. (Not always, granted.)
Reducing demand in that period will reduce the prices paid by the grid and save everyone money.

  • I see they don't mention ovens! We did the Octopus trial a few months back and avoided not only using the dishwasher and washing machine during the set times, but also the oven and kettle. We got a rebate of about 21p each time. I don't know how you could possibly save £6 worth of electricity.
