Theft & credit card protection

in Credit cards
Posting on behalf of my poor boyfriend who has an additional card on my M&S account, who had a bag of Xmas shopping stolen whilst out today. Now I'm pretty sure M&S doesn't have any sort of insurance built in for this kind of thing, but for future reference does anyone know any card providers that do?
Thanks very much!
Thanks very much!

partnership card from John Lewis covers items in transit but not once you take possession of it. Egg Money covers in transit:
"Egg Money automatically gives you free purchase in transit protection for items costing more than £25. This means you're covered for up to £1,000 per item if your purchases get damaged, lost or stolen before you get them home, or for up to 30 days, whichever comes first.See more details on the free Egg Money in transit purchase protection policy."
So it seems Egg Money covers your purchases in transit either when it's being delivered by a third party or when you're taking it home 'in transit'.
You should check your home insurance policy to see if it covers items like this that you've bought and not got home with yet (i.e. personal possessions).

I believe all the following (and others) offer this sort of insurance, though the T&C differ in each case:
Cahoot
Citibank
Egg
MBNA

Thank you for the info, the bag was only worth about £30 but it got me thinking!
Once again, thanks for the replies....I like my coffee black, just like my metal!

&More do not offer purchase protection - I contacted them about the same subject a few months ago and was told that they did not offer this nor did they have 'in transit' protection insurance either. There is nothing in the T&C's about this and no mention is made of it there.
cahoot used to offer it on their credit card, but since you can't apply for one of these now, you would have to be a current holder of a card with them now to be able to take advantage of it.
Citi definitely offer this service as has been pointed out above.
The problem is that there is usually a minimum amount that you have to claim on these policies, so it makes it a bit ineffective cost-wise if it's for small amounts as they tend not to be covered. Also, from reading Citi's exclusions they state that you must first, before you claim on their purchase protection policy:
"3.0 CLAIMS PROCEDURES
You must always submit your claim first to:
your home contents insurance;
personal property insurance;
motor vehicle insurance;
business property insurance;
fire insurance; or
any insurer providing you with cover for the damaged item...
You must complete and return the claim form with the requested documentation, including:
the purchase receipt;
a copy of the card receipt; and
the account statement showing the transaction. You must return the claim form as soon as possible and no later than 90 days from the date of the theft or damage. Send the form to the following address: Bankers Insurance Company Limited, 117-119 Whitby Road, Slough, Berkshire, SL1 3DR. We may ask you to submit additional information such as:
a complete product description, including model number, serial number or other identifying numbers;
a photograph of the damaged item;
written proof of cover, (or lack of cover), under another insurance policy;
witness reports and any additional information, such as police and insurance reports. You must supply the requested information no later than six months from the date of the theft or damage. If you do not, it may prejudice our position to pay your claim. If you are asked to, you must send the item that you are claiming for, at your own expense, to an address that we will supply. If the item is part of a pair or set, we will not pay more than the value of any one part or parts unless the items cannot be used individually or cannot be replaced individually. We have the right to recover damages from any party responsible for the theft or damage, in your name but for our benefit, before or after we have paid your claim. You must:
tell Bankers Insurance Company Limited as soon as possible of any theft or damage;
fully complete and submit the claim form and follow all the claim procedures and instructions;
notify Bankers Insurance Company Limited prior to proceeding with any repairs. If you do not then we may not be able to pay your claim."
Seems a VERY contrived process... :rolleyes:0
