Cant update my email as my username has characters that are not allowed?

hi, my account is super old and i set my username in the early days when special characters were allowed ($). The email address i use on this forum is also very old and i would like to update to my current email, but i get an error message that my username is not allowed but also doesnt allow my to edit my username
