100% renewable green electricity, still going up?

Our electricity with Eon next is stated to be 100% renewable. For me that means that all my power is from things like turbines and solar and NOT derived from gas turbines.

Why then is my electricity bill about to become stupidly expensive? I honestly don’t understand the link between my apparent renewable power and the massive price rises caused by the hike in the price of gas.

Also, if the two ARE actually linked somehow, what possible difference will it make if the whole country goes green with turbines everywhere. It may do wonders for our carbon output but won’t make a tiny bit of difference to the cost.

Anyone know what’s happening??

  • If a wind farm can sell the electricity to someone else for a higher price, why should they be forced to sell it to you at a lower one?  Everyone pays (roughly) the wholesale price which is set by (ish) the most expensive generator that has to run to cover the demand.

Not exactly how it works with interconnections, hedging, operation profiles, constraints etc, but good enough as an approximation.  There's also the renewables certificates that mean green energy doesn't actually have to come from renewables.

The most expensive generator needed to cover demand at the moment is expensive gas (or old coal), so that's how much everyone gets to charge.

The actual energy you use is not 100% green. It's from the power stations connected to the DNO and could be a mixture of every source from gas to nuclear to solar and wind. Maybe a bit of hydro. Which supplier you pay is irrelevant: the mix is the same for you and your neighbour.
For a 'green' tariff, Eon simply match every kWh you use with a certificate for the same amount of green or renewable energy. They don't themselves need to generate a single kWh of green energy.
Energy is priced internationally by the producers and the retail suppliers have to compete for it at the wholesale price.
