Eon Next - 100% Renewable Energy

Eon state they are 100% Renewable energy so why are my energy bills going up 3 fold from October if they are using Renewable energy. Has the cost of wind gone up along with oil.

  • Because power supplied by renewables is sold at the market price.

EON are 100% Renewable energy, but not all of your energy comes from EON.

In fact, not all of your energy is even produced in the UK.

    See here:

  • So are EON getting wind produced energy from other countries. I thought Renewable energy was from wind power.
  • All power supplied to homes in the UK come from the grid. That energy in the grid comes from everything - oil, gas, wind solar, hydro - from everywhere - UK, Europe, Asia etc. There is no hook up to your home that says your energy is from wind from the north sea , it's just a marketing gimmick.

Power produced by EON maybe 100% renewable, but your property may only be using 5% of that and 95% from other sources.
So they are could be technically correct in what they are saying, it's just misleading and more a "Look at us, we are green" rubbish that means very little.
Swapping to another provider such as EDF or Octopus will not change where your energy comes from and will not make your energy any more "green".

Here is an article at The Conversation that explains it in more detail than I can:
    N. Hampshire, he/him. Octopus Intelligent Go elec & Tracker gas / Vodafone BB / iD mobile. Ripple Kirk Hill member.
    2.72kWp PV facing SSW installed Jan 2012. 11 x 247w panels, 3.6kw inverter. 33MWh generated, long-term average 2.6 Os.
Not exactly back from my break, but dipping in and out of the forum.
Ofgem cap table, Ofgem cap explainer. Economy 7 cap explainer. Gas vs E7 vs peak elec heating costs, Best kettle!
  • I am with the OP on this, if they (eon) are telling the customer its 100% renewable then the cost of what you are buying should not be coupled to international issues (Russia).

At best Eon are profiteering off the current situation. At worst the published marketing material is a lie and they should be held accountable for what they are telling people!.

"100% renewable" doesn't mean what it seems. It's greenwash.

The government is looking to change the rules and stop this sort of thing:

You are falling into a trap. This is the latest fuel mix disclosure list that I can find:

    https://www.eonnext.com/about/fuel-mix

Like its parent company E.oN, E.oN Next is permitted by Ofgem to claim that all its fuel is renewable as it uses REGOs to offset the non-renewable sourced energy that it buys:

    Renewable tariffs

The following tariffs are backed by Renewable Electricity Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) or EU Guarantees of Origin (GoOs):
    • Corporate Standard Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) backed supply
    • Corporate Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) Wind backed supply
    • Corporate Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) Non-Wind backed supply
    • All SME NHH REGO tariffs (Direct E.ON contracts)
    • All Residential tariffs

In addition to the tariffs listed above, we may launch further tariffs that are backed by REGOs or GoOs over the course of the year.

There are only 3 suppliers in the UK that supply energy which is 100% generated from renewables: these are Ecotricity; Good Energy, and Green Energy UK. These suppliers have a permanent derogation from the Ofgem Cap. To be awarded a derogation the supplier has to demonstrate, inter alia, that:

    • The cost to the licensee of supplying electricity/gas by virtue of the tariff is materially greater than the level of the default tariff cap for reasons that are directly attributable to the support that the tariff provides to renewable energy.

Imports from Russia made up less than 4% of total UK gas supply last year, so that will have a very minimal effect on the overall gas market price.
