I have posted on the Jobs forum: As my family and I are teachers looking to relocate from ENG to Wales

We have have 3 children, eldest will year 10 (year we aim to move!) and youngest, year 6! Which larger towns would you suggest we look into as we prefer town living to City or village, but would be happy to leave 15 miles away from a city!

Thanks for reading, it’s a bit of a mix of teaching and Wales itself. Hopefully some teachers can help, I would love to hear from anyone who has also relocated their family to Wales and it’s been a great success or from those who tried it and it didn’t work, and why?

Best wishes

What’s the reason for wanting to make the move, as that might impact on the suggestions being made. What are you looking to achieve for your family and will you be job hunting?  And how is your Welsh?
Sibling moved to Bala when he got married a good few years ago now. His wife hated it - felt too isolated and struggled to make friends so they upped again and moved to Cumbria.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I suppose it depends on exactly which part of Wales you are talking about?....we made the move years ago for work reasons and have no regrets. Only potential problem is heatlh care as it's pretty ropey. The wheels fell of the Welsh NHS wagon a long time ago, (at least in our area), and you wil struggle to find an HHS dentist, but that now seems to be "UK" wide problem anyway?

Hopefully not English teachers. Any reason to abbreviate England to "ENG"? Are your children also teachers or just your partner and you?

    6/10 Must try harder.

Wales has quite a wide scope distance wise...are you thinking north south or what.  Where a previous post mentions of Bala Gwynedd  is in my mind an area where welsh speaking.  While I can't answer the schooling questions both English teaching schools and Welsh Teaching school sit in most areas although in rural areas it may be a bit of travel involved in choice.

Area wise Wrexham skirts the border and has some nice out lying districts, it is possibly the largest town or should I say city recently - plus links wise you are close to both Manchester and Liverpool airports and concerts museum etc.  Pushing in from there is Mold in Flintshire, my family lived close to there few years back, then there is the coastal town Prestayn Llandudno

I am not sure about the south - used to go to Cardiff with work now and again and my work colleague were super friendly.

Very hard to comment without knowing which part of Wales you want to move to. I've lived north and south. I work in the middle and currently live across the he border in Oswestry. Without knowing your area no one can comment

As above it depends what area - I know a few English people who've moved to Wales, both to work and to retire, some loved it, others hated it. In some areas there is a significant element of anti "immigrant" xenophobia aimed at English (or any non Welsh) "immigrants". Reseach the towns you're thinking about and try to get experiences/opinions of English people who've moved there. If you're moving to a mainly Welsh speaking area, learn the language and use it! (Amazing how many people learn a language then don't bother using it because it's easier to speak English!)
  • Very area dependent. I live in a coastal town about 10 miles from Cardiff and love it (although I was born here). If you have area specific questions feel free to ask me. I’ve also had nothing short of excellent, speedy treatment on the NHS very recently although I think the waiting lists etc are a U.K. wide problem although the previous poster is correct re NHS dentists being rarer than hens teeth.

All I would say is that generally, the further West you go the further into Welsh language territory you go and you may struggle more as in West Wales (and parts of North Wales) the locals all speak Welsh to each other.

I did it ..on my own on the edge of the Brecons. It was a disaster.

It depends on so many factors but for me my family were just too far away , health care non existent & we are pretty lucky with so many things here. (I am in SE)  Until you try you won't know.

My motto is "better to regret the things you have done, than to regret the things you haven't"

It may work for you but it may not, you won't know until you try

Why are you looking to relocate to Wales, specifically?  Welsh language apart, Wales has nothing that England doesn't also offer.  There are probably  parts of Wales much like wherever you live now, and if you think it's all rural with cheap house prices, then there are parts of England like that as well.  So why "Wales"?  Better to cite the reasons you think you want to move to "Wales"  and then people can not only tell you what parts of Wales those are (if they exist) but also what other areas of the UK might suit them just as well if not better.

"Brecon Beacons", or just "Beacons".  There is only one Brecon.
