PayPal credit and confusion helppppp

Hi so I have a slight tale of woe....

This all started in Nov 2019 where I purchased a TV from samsung for just over 2k.

Fast forward to july 2022 and that tv has now gone pop and is no longer working. Clearly a tv should last longer than this and even the samsung authorised technicians agree.

Samsung flat out refuse to help or grace me with a one time warranty extension.

The advice was then to reach out to PayPal and seek a resolution from them in regards to this matter. PayPal have today told me (after ignoring my emails) that I have no leg to stand on as 180 days have elapsed since I bought the item....

I have tried to argue my rights as a consumer but they are flat out refusing to listen.

Any advice on my next steps?? I was thinking FCA but I am not even sure they will help?

Thanks in advance

Rob

FCA don't deal with customer complaints and definitely not complaints about TVs.

You would need to prove that the product was inherently faulty. That may be hard to prove and probably not worth pursuing.

Which 'rights as a consumer' did you try to argue with them, out of interest?

The FCA are the financial conduct regulator, they do not deal with complaints about televisions.

Trading standards are possibly your next port of call, goods are supposed to be fit for purpose for a period of at least 6 years, so I suggest you take the matter up with them -

  • Hi, thanks both.

Sorry should've been clearer my argument was going to be with paypal and their lack of support with regards to the FCA. Essentially not responding to my complaint and not taking any consideration into my issues with regards to the claim I was trying to lodge.

The complaint with samsung was that a TV should last longer than two years and the advice from the engineer was that the power supply board which is the likely fault shouldn't  have happened and therefore is of not satisfactory quality....

    Thanks

PayPal is regulated by the Financial Services Authority, which means you have the back-up of the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) if you have a complaint about their service.

However you must first complain to PayPal, and allow them to go through there complaints resolution process, only then can you escalate to the FOS.

For complaints about the TV not been fit for purpose, see the link in my last post.

The FCA is the regulator and does not handle consumer complaints.

What exactly have Paypal done that is wrong?

I have tried to argue my rights as a consumer but they are flat out refusing to listen.

What do you think your rights are?

When you use a credit card you get an increased level of consumer protection on the goods you buy. if you use a payment service, you do not unless they volunteer to offer something.  In the case of Paypal, you get 180 days.   If you linked the Paypal service to a credit card then it is possible that the card provider could offer some protection.

You should never buy an expensive item with a payment service.

You need to contact Samsung as the retailer if that is who you bought it from. You don't need a "warranty extension".

If they TV has broken due to a fault that would have been there at manufacturer then you are covered by consumer rights. Get an independant report to confirm this and the the retailer has to repair, replace or refund (if refund it can take into account the age).

It did last longer than 2 years.  2 years and 7 months so a good 25% longer.

Have you lodged a complaint under Consumer Rights with the retailer? Samsung only if bought directly.

Push it, you'll get a portion of the original cost back as a voucher.

PayPal won't be involved at all.

With a lot of TV`s these days, the soldering on the power boards is rubbish, done by robot, and lasts just about as long as the warranty does, they can be re-soldered, but unless you know what you're doing, it`s a real pain, and the cost of a new one usually outweighs the value of the telly.

I had this issue once, about 10 years ago, it was a Hitachi set, complained to them that TV not fit for purpose, managed to get a free repair, which was still going strong 6 years later when we replaced it, so it can pay to make a fuss.
